Position Overview

The DInternational Foundations Program in the Werklund School of Education is currently seeking part-time hourly IELTS Examiners.

The INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM (IELTS) is one of the most popular language proficiency tests for higher education and global migration.  The International Foundations Program (IFP) within the Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary, requires IELTS Examiners to assume responsibility for maintaining the integrity of the test and ensure a fair testing procedure will be followed for all students in the writing and speaking modules.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Examining students regularly for the writing and speaking modules of the IELTS test at designated testing sessions
  • Following the standards set by the test centre and IDP for IELTS tests
  • Maintaining confidentiality and security
  • Complying with all elements of the Examiner Code of Practice and IELTS Confidentiality Undertaking
  • Undertaking scheduled standardization training and recertification

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Must have an undergraduate or graduate degree and a TEFL or TESOL qualification recognized by TESL Canada to at least Level One
  • Although there are no teaching responsibilities for this position, it is important that the incumbent have a strong pedagogical background in adult EAP/ESL education, and an absolute minimum of 3 years'  TESOL teaching experience with adult students, in order to fulfill the responsibilities of the position
  • Must follow detailed directions exactly required
  • Must have strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Fluent communication skills in both written and spoken English required
  • Additional proof of fluency may be required
  • Must be conscientious and reliable
  • Must work effectively with a diverse population, within a high-pressured, multi-task environment required. There will be an occasional observer who will evaluate and determine the examiner's ability to successfully meet IELTS examination procedures, responsibilities, and performance expectations as required.

Number of Hours/Week (estimate):            Hours will vary, dependent upon need per examination schedule.
Hourly Rate:                                                      The starting wage for this position is $20.00 per hour (training rate). After completion of training and successfully passing the exams the wage for this position will increase to $60.00 per hour  (based upon correctly assessing a minimum of 3 speaking examinations/hour, or 3-4 writing scripts /hour)

Each new IELTS Examiner is provided (and must pass) paid classroom training. Training is mandatory and will occur during the first 2 weekends at the University of Calgary. Flexibility is required and candidates are expected to accommodate the classroom training schedule and exam completion. Only candidates who successfully complete their training will be added to the examiner pool.  Training is approximately 30 hours over 2 consecutive weekends not including homework assignments. 3-4 hours of homework is standard for each each consecutive weekend.
Weekend 1: Candidates are instructed in and evaluated on their ability assess writing to IELTS standards. Assessment is by examination.
Weekend 2: Candidates are instructed in and evaluated on their ability to accurately assess speaking to IELTS standards.  Assessment is by examination.

All IELTS Examiners will be required to sign the IELTS Confidentiality Undertaking and sign and abide by the IELTS Code of Practice for IELTS Examiners.
The IELTS Examiner positions are non-union (Reader/Demonstrator) positions.
