Position Description

The Faculty of Environmental Design is introducing a new graduate-level Certificate in Built and Landscape Heritage. This is the first of a slate of University credit Certificates, which the Faculty will be developing in the coming year.  This particular post-baccalaureate Certificate is intended for early and mid-career practitioners in architecture, landscape architecture, planning and other related disciplines who want to acquire specialized knowledge and skills related to heritage conservation.  It will be of particular interest to students who would like to acquire heritage conservation knowledge and skills in a Canadian context, with a view to the best practice in the field, regionally, nationally and internationally.  The Certificate will address the needs of working heritage professionals who wish to upgrade their skills and knowledge, to add a professional credential, and to focus on heritage conservation approaches within an concentrated program delivered over a one-year period at the Faculty of Environmental Design. 

Curriculum content will explore the links between heritage conservation theory and practice through the lens of research, policy analysis and design intervention.  A comprehensive range of both tangible and intangible heritage resources will be considered across different scales, from a single site to a broad landscape complex.  One of the guiding documents will be Canada’s Historic Places Initiative along with the supporting frameworks provided by international, federal, provincial and municipal agencies.  Each of the four courses will be delivered in an intensive Block-week format in order to accommodate the needs of working heritage professionals. 


The Faculty of Environmental Design is currently recruiting for a Term Certain Sessional Instructor to teach Heritage Conservation Policy and Planning during the Spring 2018 Session with preparation beginning in February 2018 and completion of the course on May 31, 2018. The Sessional Instructor will collaborate with the Built and Landscape Heritage advisory group established to oversee the development and delivery of this Certificate as well as EVDS Associate Deans of both the Planning + Landscape Architecture as well as Architecture programs. 

The Sessional Instructor will be responsible to craft the content and flow of the course to ensure the material is current and relevant, innovative in its delivery, and engaging for the learner.  In particular this will mean,

  • Development of course content including: readings, syllabi, assignments, site visits, digital resources, end assignments and other applicable materials.
  • Identification of prospective sites for visits, and guest lecturers.
  • Instruction during January block week and timely evaluation of assignments.
  • Responsible for submission of final grades by May 31, 2018.

Course Description

This course will provide an overview of heritage policy and planning within a community development context from designations and incentives to impact assessments. 


Applicants must hold a graduate degree relevant to the subject area of Built and Landscape Heritage Conservation and show demonstrated evidence of strong teaching and educational development abilities.  They must have a minimum of three years' experience in the field of Heritage Conservation practice, and or education within the field.  The successful candidate must possess a strong a clear understanding of how to apply current and emerging Heritage Conservation principles and ideas to deliver strengthen teaching and learning in this field at a post-baccalaureate level.  Also essential are strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as demonstrated abilities in managing and delivering similar curriculum development projects.
