Position Overview

The Libraries & Cultural Resources (LCR) invites applications for a Consultant, LCR Research Projects. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 27 months.

Reporting to, and under the direction of, the Principal Investigator (Vice Provost and University Librarian), the Research Project Consultant is responsible for facilitating, guiding and overseeing a grant-funded project which will result in the development of a research platform (defined as a suite of common services, technical infrastructure, and expertise) to support important multidisciplinary research at the University of Calgary.  In doing so, the Research Project Consultant will collaborate with University of Calgary research faculty, and administrators and staff from Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) and the Research Services Office.  Development of the research platform will be informed through a sub-granting competition focusing on scholars in the humanities, social sciences, environmental studies and urban design who are working in the thematic areas of Smart Cities, Arctic Studies, and Cultural Discourse.

The Research Project Consultant is responsible for coordinating the development of a research platform that will support multidisciplinary research, and will be charged with and accountable for the development of procedures for implementing the research platform. The incumbent will be required to initiate and develop working relationships with senior academics and senior leaders across the campus and, in doing so, create credibility and rapport.  Therefore, being a highly skilled communicator is critical to the success of this position.  The incumbent will be dealing with complex issues on a daily basis and, therefore, must possess exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills. This position requires a solid understanding of university policies and practices, research funding guidelines, and compliance regulations. The incumbent will need to anticipate internal and external challenges and/or regulatory issues, and recommend and implement solutions. Challenges will be complex and successful solutions will be necessary to maintain the University's reputation with the internationally recognized funder, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.  While the incumbent will work closely with the Principal Investigator (Vice Provost), s/he will often be required to work independently, making on-site decisions as required and serve as a key resource for project participants.
In addition to the aforementioned responsibilities, the Research Project Consultant will have full managerial responsibilities for one regular half-time AUPE staff member.  Should there be need for term employees to support the research platform work, such employees would also report to the Research Project Consultant.
This position requires strong collaboration, innovation, and partnership-building skills. The work requires the management of diverse interests and project deadlines and the ability to simultaneously coordinate multiple projects. High volume and variety of work demands, and internally and externally imposed deadlines and requirements, can be expected.  The outcome of this high profile project will draw national and international attention, contributing to the University´s reputation with the funder and will strongly align with and support the University's Eyes High strategy.

This position will typically operate within normal business hours; however, the Research Project Consultant may be called upon to make timely decisions outside of normal business hours.  This is a fixed term position, with an anticipated start date of June 15, 2017 until September 30, 2019, funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Project Leadership

  • Design and conduct planning activities related to the internal granting competition including communication with Associate Deans (Research), Chairs, and scholars
  • Oversee the development of procedures necessary to the implementation of the research platform
  • Lead a series of workshops for scholars at the Letter of Intent stage to assist them in developing competitive Letters of Intent
  • Advise scholars on Letters of Intent, proposal and budget development and answer general inquiries related to submission of funding proposals
  • Act as LCR's primary contact in assisting grantees with issues related to the various projects, working within established budgets, and connecting grantees with resources required, including training and skills development
  • Review grant budgets and activities for compliance with The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation's terms and conditions and the University of Calgary's policies and procedures
  • Have full managerial responsibilities for one AUPE staff member

Project Management

  • Oversee the competition process (terms and conditions for proposals including award letters, evaluation forms, etc.)
  • Process incoming proposals and coordinate the adjudication process
  • Draft acceptance and declination letters to be sent by the Vice Provost
  • Act as the primary contact between LCR and grantees for acquisition of technology required for each grant
  • Solicit grant status reports
  • Prepare a summary of the research process for each grant and the information resources and functional infrastructure employed by the scholars
  • Compile a report of the collaborative interactions with LCR staff and services and the use of common spaces
  • Compile draft grant reports for the External Expert Reviewers and support the review process
  • Draft financial and narrative details for the Principal Investigator to employ in preparing a final project report for submission to The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

Decision Making

  • Coordinate the implementation of strategies vital to the success of the overall project
  • Make decisions as necessary to support the success of the specific projects funded by the sub-grants
  • Recommend revised funding allocations as the sub-grant research projects evolve
  • Work closely with financial and managerial personnel in monitoring the financial operations of the project

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Possess Undergraduate degree; Graduate degree preferred
  • A minimum of three years of progressively more responsible experience in a management role, preferably in an academic environment
  • Expertise in computer science, data management, information science, or related disciplines
  • Demonstrated knowledge of information technologies and emerging trends in scholarly research
  • Evidence of successful project management
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish positive and productive collaborations
  • Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust priorities, take initiative, set goals, and manage time wisely
