Position Description

SYZYGY

In 2016, the University of Calgary was awarded $75 million, over seven years, from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) for its initiative entitled: Global Research Initiative in Sustainable Low Carbon Unconventional Resources. The goal of this research is to dramatically reduce the impact of energy extraction and energy use on the environment.

As part of the implementation of its CFREF scientific strategy we are seeking to address a research and development grand challenge, aiming to assess and develop:

Appropriate strategies for production of electrical energy, directly from reservoirs, while leaving any produced CO2 in the ground (SYZYGY).

This project involves both fundamental discovery in the areas of biogeochemistry, nanotechnology, material science and subsurface engineering, as well as a focus on technology development. The project, SYZYGY, is seeking team members at the Postdoctoral candidate level.

Successful candidates will work within an existing multidisciplinary team of biologists, nano-technologists, electrochemists, surface scientists, geochemists and engineers consisting of several PI’s, Postdoctoral fellows and several graduate students.

Accordingly, to add to the existing team, we seek applications from qualified candidates within 2-4 years of their Ph.D. degree to take up 2 Postdoc positions with the following specific qualifications:

  • Electrochemistry and fuel cell construction (1 Postdoc position): This project addresses the mechanical and electrochemical design of a fuel cell system that could be emplaced into a subsurface reservoir. We plan to hire a Postdoctoral fellow with expertise in electrochemistry and materials science. The appropriate candidate will have a PhD in aspects of electrochemistry, materials science, nanomaterials, fuel cells and batteries.
  • Emplacement of electrode systems (1 Postdoc position): Emplacement of devices in subsurface reservoirs is difficult and expensive and we seek to develop novel systems, including autonomous self-powered devices, for emplacing electrodes and sensor systems in geological media such as petroleum reservoirs. These systems must be inexpensive and low power and the project scope includes a feasibility analysis, design and prototype testing. For this project, we propose to hire a Postdoctoral fellow with expertise in electrical or mechanical engineering with a specialization in mechatronic design.

Each candidate will be required to work within a team environment and so excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of interdisciplinary researchers is a must. Experience with technology development and commercialization is not required, but would be advantageous.

Postdoctoral positions offer a stipend of $55,000 CAD/year for 2 years. Postdoctoral fellows will be expected to apply for major funding opportunities they are eligible for (e.g. NSERC, Killam, AITF, Banting). The positions also come with sufficient research support to be managed by the candidates in consultation with the PI members of the team.
