Position Overview

The Business Intelligence, Analytics & Integration Team in the Information Technologies is currently seeking two (2) Full-time Regular Senior Business Intelligence Specialist(s).

This position is part of the Business Intelligence, Analytics and Integration Services (BIA) team, reporting to the Associate Director, Business Intelligence, Analytics and Integration Services, within Information Technologies. The BIA team consists of a cross-functional group of Business Intelligence Architects, Business Intelligence Specialists (Data Acquisition Architects and Data Modelers / Analysts) and Business Intelligence Developers.

The focus of the team is to work in collaboration with our internal clients to develop Business Intelligence, Analytics and Integration Services solutions for a diverse set of subject areas such as Student information (admissions, records, awards and finance), financials by research project, enterprise financials and budgeting, human resources, supply chain, and fund development. We also focus on developing enterprise reporting solutions as well as enable analytics capability across the university. We are accountable for the development, management and sustainment of the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) as well as enterprise reporting platforms (Cognos, SSRS, Tableau). In addition to the data warehouse, the BIA team supports the Hyperion (EPM) suite, Hyperion Planning and Financial Reporting. The team is also in the process of developing a robust data integration practice.

Working Environment

  • Support a strategic and operational 24/7 infrastructure, and may be subject to call out
  • At times, with emergency work situations, the incumbent can be subject to high-stress situations
  • Error can result in reputation and financial damage for the University
  • High demand for new services and enhancements can result in multiple projects and tasks
  • Project and task deadlines may require overtime and extended hours

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Business Intelligence Development

  • Successfully gather and translate business requirements into technical requirements
  • Effectively document work completed and participate in cross-training sessions in the team
  • Ensure that solutions developed meet client specification and requirements
  • Ensure that solutions developed are well tested and documented
  • Contribute to development of project plans, schedules and estimates for Business Intelligence projects
  • Work with end users, business analysts, and IT related staff to identify and understand source data systems
  • Design conceptual and logical models for Business Intelligence solutions
  • Map source system data to data warehouse models
  • Create and implement physical database designs
  • Design and develop security processes or measures to meet security requirements for reporting solutions
  • Develop and test extraction, transformation, load (ETL), and security processes
  • Define metadata and develop processes for capturing and maintaining metadata from all data warehousing components
  • Adapt data models and ETL and security processes to accommodate changes in source systems and new business user requirements
  • Create test cases and conduct quality control activities

Leadership

  • Provide expert knowledge, guidance or mentorship for Business Intelligence Developers / Specialist in developing Business Intelligence solutions
  • Lead the development and sustainment of Hyperion based solution
  • Lead the development and sustainment of non Hyperion Business Intelligence solutions
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to Business Intelligence
    Project Teams / Developers in interpreting and understanding business needs, designing solutions based on best practice
  • Lead functional teams of Developers and Business Analysts to solve complex Business intelligence problems
  • Work closely with business users, Business Intelligence Architects and Developers to design and develop innovative solutions in an effort to continuously improve the Business Intelligence service
  • Lead Developers when needed to resolve complex tier 2 support tickets in a timely manner as well as work towards standardizing the resolutions where possible
  • Work with Business Intelligence Architects and lead Business Intelligence Developers to help any production related issues quickly and effectively
  • Oversee the documentations of resolution steps and participates in the development of knowledge base articles
  • Contribute to the development, integration, administration and evolution of the data warehouse based on best practices
  • Lead the troubleshooting of Business Intelligence tool problems and tunes for performance
  • Develop and manage Business Intelligence training, documentation, and help desk capabilities
  • Proactively ensure development standards, change management standards and best practices are adhered to
  • Produce training models and content for Developers
  • Actively train and mentor Business Intelligence Developers / Specialist to build Hyperion expertise in the BIA team
  • Meet with business users regularly to understand quality of service and propose plans and solutions to improve the service

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Education and Work Experience
  • Degree in Computer Science or similar field required. Graduate degree preferred
  • Oracle Hyperion certifications required
  • Cognos or other Data warehouse / Business Intelligence certifications are required
  • Certification in project management and/or business analysis, process improvement preferred
  • 10+ years' experience in Business Intelligence or related fields
  • Specific Skills
  • Ability to translate business needs into technical solutions
  • Strong project management and business analysis experience
  • Proven experience in leading projects and teams
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and debugging skills
  • In-depth knowledge and proven experience of full stack Business Intelligence toolsets, architectures, functions and features
  • In-depth knowledge of SQL and relational and multidimensional designs
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; presentation skills
  • Strong business analysis and analytical skills
  • Expertise in Hyperion product migration methods and technologies
  • Expertise Hyperion calculation scripts and business rules
  • In depth knowledge and hands on experience with development and support for the following technologies:
    • Hyperion Planning
    • Essbase
    • Financial Reporting Studio
    • Business Rules
    • Smart View
    • FDMEE
    • Calc Scripts
    • Maxl Scripts
  • Ability to use standard BI and database tools including SSIS, SSAS, IBM Cognos Framework Manager and Report Studio, Tableau, Hyperion Reporting, MS Analysis Services and MS SQL
  • Solid understanding of the Kimball methodology
  • Strong understanding of Data warehouse (DW) / Business Intelligence (BI) concepts and principles
  • Solid understanding of development methodologies - SDLC and Agile
  • Ability to learn and use other tools as required
  • Exposure or understanding of ERP data models and processes (e.g. PeopleSoft, SAP etc.)
  • Experience consulting with business users to troubleshoot issues and the ability help and train users and team members

Desirable Skills

  • Exposure or understanding of Dashboards, Scorecards, OLAP, Key Performance Indicators, Data Mining, Corporate Performance Management, Predictive Analytics etc.
  • Experience or exposure to data modeling tools like Embarcadero, Erwin, Visio
  • Knowledge and experience with master data, reference data and data governance
