Instructional Design Contractor, Continuing Education

Position Overview

University of Calgary Continuing Education is currently accepting applications for Instructional Design Contractors for a variety of projects.

The University of Calgary Continuing Education (UCCE) houses one of Canada's largest and most successful continuing education departments. It is a multi-disciplinary unit offering diploma, certificate and non-degree programs using on-site and online technologies for course delivery. In support of the University of Calgary's core principles and financial objectives, Continuing Education is an academic unit with a mandate to respond to the needs of the community through the design, development and delivery of lifelong learning opportunities.

The projects will largely involve the development of course curriculum in collaboration with subject matter experts who have various areas of expertise.  In this role, you will apply the principles of instructional design to create customized courses and/or training modules that include writing effective learning outcomes, designing assessment and instructional strategies, design and integrate media into course curriculum and/or training modules, evaluating and revising curriculum.

Because of the nature of the work, there will be opportunities for various types of temporary contracts including short-term; long term; part-time and full-time commitments. Project work may begin as soon as Fall 2017.

Applicants should have proven, applied experience in designing engaging learning solutions for adults in both online, in-class and blended contexts. A solid educational technology background and knowledge of adult learning principles is also required.


  • Related Master's degree, (e.g. a Master's degree in Education (Instructional Design and Development, Adult Education, Learning Technologies))
  • Demonstrated skills/ experience in multimedia curriculum development
  • Previous experience in adult learning and teaching workshops/classes
  • A minimum five years of proven experience in designing multimedia presentations, courses and/or training for adults in online and face-to-face learning environments
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders including instructors, staff and subject-matter experts (SMEs)
  • Strong working knowledge of learning management systems (preferably Desire2Learn);
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in adult learning concepts and theories
  • Ability to design in an array of different learning methods
  • Exceptional presentation development, delivery and communications skills
  • Strong technical writing/editing skills
  • Ability to design/ create instructional content based on need
  • Experience and knowledge of various training delivery systems including online, classroom, blended, etc.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Excellent communication and consultation skills;
  • Ability to manage deadlines and function well under pressure
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative balanced with the discretion to ask for feedback
  • Ability to receive and incorporate constructive feedback from reviewers
