Position Overview

The Financial Reporting Operations within Finance is currently seeking two (2) Full-time Regular Financial Adminsitrator(s).

This position reports to the Manager, General Ledger Administration. This position deals with high volumes, peak periods and tight deadlines. The incumbent has daily interaction with internal stakeholders. The Financial Admnimstator must demonstrate strong communication and client relation skills. This position responds to unique financial reporting requests from numerous units across campus. This position is responsible for review and initiation or approval of journal entries; sound professional judgement and integrity is required. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Review journal entry supporting documentation to ensure it:

  • Support and explains each line of the journal entry
  • Include approval by the budget owner/approver - either department or project - or their delegate
  • Include requestor certification
  • Is in compliance with supporting documentation rules

Review journal entry chart-fields to ensure the transaction:

  • Is in compliance with the journal entry policy
  • Is in compliance with fund transfer rules
  • Is in compliance with fund definition rules
  • Use appropriate chart-fields
  • Ensure transactions are compliant with GAAP and university policies and procedures
  • Approve journal entries within approval threshold
  • Provide coaching and guidance to journal entry initiators
  • Provide advice and instruction and respond to requests for information from departments and units across the institution
  • Liaise with Financial Reporting staff to ensure university financial reporting requirements are understood and work is consistently performed in such a way as to support accurate, timely and meaningful reporting
  • Contribute to ongoing process improvement of the university's financial systems and processes
  • Act as a resource to management to provide accurate, reliable and timely special reports
  • Attention to detail and accuracy of work performed is critical; impact of errors can be significant
  • Require understanding of accounting principles as they relate to recording of financial transactions
  • Maintain confidentiality and deals with sensitive information in a professional manner
  • Perform duties with minimal supervision
  • Act as a mentor and assists university staff by advising on systems, programs and unit operations
  • Work in a team environment

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Education equivalent to that obtained through completion of second or third year accounting studies in a recognized program
  • 4 to 5 years' experience in a computerized accounting environment
  • Strong spreadsheet skills
  • Strong understanding of university financial reporting systems
  • Extensive understanding of university chart-fields and ability to apply knowledge and communicate correct application of rules
  • Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Must be detailed oriented
  • Strong Communication and client relation skills
