Position Overview

The LCR Learning in the Libraries & Cultural Resources is currently seeking a Full-time Sessional Learning Commons Night Assistant (Midnight to 8 am).

Reporting to the Manager, Learning Commons, this position is 1/2 of a two-person team that works nights in a 24 hour, two floor, facility open to the public. This position is responsible for building security, client safety and the provision of basic client services including information and technology assistance. There are occasional periods of high stress when dealing with difficult situations and/or clients. At such times the incumbent has the backup of campus security. There is no direct supervision thus requiring that the person in this position work well unsupervised, using sound judgement in decision making and in communicating appropriately.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Provide security for Learning Commons facility and communicates problems to campus security officers and/or supervisors as necessary
  • Ensure that appropriate measures are taken to protect the security of users, staff and equipment
  • Assist students with basic equipment problems with printers, wireless access and use of scanners
  • Assist students with basic questions on the use of all web browsers, MS Office, and the library web page
  • Ensure users are complying with library and Learning Commons policies
  • Provide access assistance to disabled users, as requested
  • As a member of the Learning Commons team, works with others to complete special assignments as appropriate

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Require the ability to defuse difficult situations independently and effectively
  • Require strong communication and public service skills
  • Knowledge of the basic functionality of all web browsers, MS Office, and the library web page
  • Able to complete troubleshooting for technology including PCs, Mac computers and operating systems, printing, scanners, laptop support and support for USB connected devices
