Location: Main Campus

Position Description

The Faculty of Environmental Design is introducing a new graduate-level Certificate in Sustainable Urban Design. The post-baccalaureate Certificate is intended for early and mid-career practitioners in architecture, landscape architecture, planning and other related disciplines who would like to acquire specialized knowledge and skills related to urban design. It will be of interest to regional and Canadian national students who would like to acquire sustainable urban design knowledge and skills, and will also be of interest and value to international students that seek an international perspective to their practice, particularly one in a Canadian context.

The certificate will address the needs of practicing professionals who would like to upgrade their skills and knowledge or to add a professional credential, and to offer a complementary secondary specialization to architecture, landscape architecture and planning graduates, all within a compact and intensive program.

The curriculum is focused on the development of a structured design approach based on research and analysis, and considers diverse environmental factors, cultural contexts and economic feasibility. The Certificate is a one year program, delivered over two intensive sessions composed of two courses each session, anticipated to be offered in the spring/summer months. Each session will include one theory course and one studio course; the theory courses are lecture- and seminar-based modules that cover the theoretical concepts underpinning sustainable contemporary urban design practice. The studio courses allow students to apply the theoretical and operational concepts of urban design to real-world study sites.

The Faculty of Environmental Design is currently recruiting for a Coordinator to develop the vision, promotions strategy, marketing plan, and initial curriculum outlines for the Sustainable Urban Design Certificate, so that it can be offered in summer 2018. The work will be initiated in September 2017 and completed not later than February 2018. The Coordinator will report to the Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Design, and coordinate as necessary with the Associate Deans (Academic) regarding curriculum development.

The Coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Development of the vision for the Certificate based on the approval documents, to ensure that the program is current, relevant, and coherent
  • Identification of, and communication with, potential target markets (domestic and international)
  • Development of a promotion and marketing plan in collaboration with the EVDS Marketing Manager
  • Development of preliminary draft course outlines to be used as the basis for individual course instructors to prepare detailed course materials
  • Identification of, and communication with, potential course instructors

Applicants must hold a graduate degree relevant to Sustainable Urban Design and have a minimum of three years of professional experience in the field of urban design. The successful candidate must possess a clear understanding of the topic of sustainable urban design within the Calgary context, the issues and challenges facing the associated disciplines, and the potential of the certificate program to educate practitioners to become more effective in achieving high quality and sustainable urban design in Calgary and elsewhere. The candidate should have strong communication and interpersonal skills, good organizational abilities, and the ability to work within both academic and professional milieus.
