Position Description

How to accurately assess and subsequently reduce environmental impacts of development of low permeability hydrocarbon resources

In 2016, the University of Calgary (UofC) was awarded $75 million over seven years from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) for its initiative entitled: Global Research Initiative in Sustainable Low carbon Unconventional Resources”. The goal of this research is to dramatically reduce the impact of energy extraction and energy use on the environment.

A 1-year Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) position is available as part of the implementation of the UofC CFREF scientific strategy and to address the Grand Challenge of small footprint recovery from low permeability hydrocarbon resources. The project focuses on the assessment and subsequent reduction of environmental impacts of development of low permeability hydrocarbon resources. The PDF is expected to constrain rates of fugitive gas emissions from subsurface operations via gas migration and surface casing vent flows, and other sources in Western Canada. The research focus will be initially on identifying the magnitude of leakage of fugitive gases along the lithosphere-hydrosphere-pedosphere-atmosphere continuum. The Postdoctoral Fellow will work with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and geoscientists integrating geological, soil gas, and meteorological data. Experience with statistical techniques for analyzing spatial and temporal data is desirable. Publication of peer-reviewed papers in high-impact scientific journals is an expectation of this position.


  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Engineering, Science or a related field, completed within the last 5 years;
  • Expertise in hydrocarbon resource development/assessment, gas flux measurements or modeling, statistics, systems level analysis, and spatial modeling is desirable. Strength in 2 or 3 of these areas is expected. It is up to the applicant to demonstrate these strengths in their application;
  • Strong communication capabilities with proactive attitude;
  • Ability to initiate and develop original scientific research projects and willingness to mentor graduate students.

The appointment will be made initially for 1 year with a $55,000 CAD/year stipend; renewal for a second year is possible based on performance. The successful candidate will be required to work within a team environment, so excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of interdisciplinary researchers is a must.

The successful applicant will commence the Postdoctoral Fellowship no later than January 1st 2018, but preferably sooner.
