Position Overview

Continuing Education is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Instructional Designer for approximately 2 years.

Continuing Education consists of a number of distinct programming teams with a central service team, serving almost 20,000 students annually. It is expected to fund, through revenue generation, the majority of its operational costs while contributing financially to the University. The success of University of Calgary Continuing Education in meeting its business target in a competitive environment is dependent upon providing highly effective student services and quality programs.

The Instructional Designer works closely with the Manager, Learning Services and will serve all Continuing Education program areas to cultivate a positive culture of continuous professional development in teaching and learning. The ability to exhibit a highly effective professional practice in a complex work environment, manage multiple projects, consult/advise and work with diverse teams is a must.

As part of an in-house team consisting of graphic and digital designers, a communications specialist and program development manager, the Instructional Designer will have demonstrated experience in the development, delivery and evaluation of professional development programs, courses, and end-user design support. They will also have a solid educational technology background and knowledge of adult learning principles.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Play both lead and supporting roles as assigned in the (re) development, delivery and evaluation of new and existing online, blended and face-to-face courses at University of Calgary Continuing Education
  • Play both lead and supporting roles as assigned to develop and maintain necessary end-user support and learning resources, which may include print and or digital reports, policies and procedures, proposals, summaries, manuals, and user guides
  • Create training resources for instructors and staff on core learning platforms, design principles and other learning needs
  • Work collaboratively with instructors, staff and subject-matter experts (SMEs) to (re) design and develop new and existing courses
  • Mentor and coach instructors in issues of course design using a variety of instructional design strategies, emerging technologies and formats
  • Advise, coach and mentor instructors and staff on issues of UCCE course design standards, course design, curriculum mapping and assessment strategies or refer them to related and appropriate university contacts and resources
  • Through a consultative approach, works with instructors, subject matter experts and staff with various degrees of knowledge and experience to develop, design and evaluate courses
  • Writes audience-appropriate content regarding instructional design and educational technology
  • Works within a project management system to develop and manage a project plan (including time lines and resources) which is appropriate to the nature of the project
  • Participates in various committees to cultivate a positive culture of continuous professional development in teaching and learning

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master's degree (Instructional Design, Curriculum, Adult Education, Learning Technologies) or a combination of equivalent education and work experience in adult learning and educational technology
  • Minimum five years of proven experience in course design for online and face-to-face learning environments
  • Excellent organizational and verbal communication skills, and attention to detail
  • Strong technical writing/editing skills and use of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong working knowledge of learning management systems and asynchronous technologies (currently Desire2Learn, Adobe Presenter and Adobe Connect)
  • Experience in adult professional development, teaching and/or DACUM facilitation considered an asset
  • Experience working in Drupal and writing promotional educational materials considered an asset
