Position Overview

Technology, Discovery and Digital Services in the Libraries & Cultural Resources is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Data Curation Technician for approximately 2 years.

Reporting to the Manager, Digitization and Repository Services, the Data Curation Technician will support the development of programs and technologies to promote the management, preservation, and publication of data.

The Digitization and Repository Services Unit supports the research and teaching mission of the University of Calgary. We preserve significant and unique digital scholarly materials that contribute to the advancement of research, teaching, and the cultural heritage of Albertan communities. Through collaboration with external partners and internal departments, the Data Curation Technician will support online tools that sustain research and contribute to an expanding communal body of knowledge. Dataverse, PRISM, The Vault and CONTENTdm are the repositories for the university's intellectual output and include data, faculty publications, masters and doctoral theses, and research output from across Southern Alberta.

The Data Curation Technician works in a team environment of ongoing change, with multiple projects, and shifting priorities. Projects involve a high volume of work, many deadlines throughout the year, and complex technical decision-making. The Technician manages a significant number of projects simultaneously with autonomy and is responsible for prioritizing competing interests and timelines. The work is primarily conducted during normal Monday-Friday business hours. Strong technical skills are critical.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Extract, parse, filter and transform data to be loaded into digital repositories
  • Verify data accuracy, ensuring it meets required standards. Make edits/fixes to the data when needed
  • Using established guidelines, make decisions on data contents with limited other information on hand
  • Design stable systems to ensure research data can be archived, explored, discovered, and reused to qualitatively benefit the University and other appropriate audiences
  • Deliver client support for training and troubleshooting on supported software
  • Keep up-to-date on using web services and related technologies, implement workflows for managing data and digital objects as they move from acquisition and processing into long-term storage and indexing for online access
  • Evaluate, implement, and customize tools such as Archivematica to support digital object processing and conversion, data transformation, metadata extraction, archival description, and digital forensics
  • Collaborate with team members on the data management requirements of repository solutions and front-end discovery development
  • Ensure adherence of systems to technical, quality assurance, data integrity, and security standards
  • Document solutions and workflows for internal purposes and also as part of compliance with University regulatory and privacy requirements
  • Keep up to date on technology trends related to data curation, archiving, discovery and visualization
  • Communicate with web developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders in the evaluation, education and implementation of a robust data curation infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with units in LCR to explore the ways in which research is conducted in an environment of data sharing
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications / Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in computer science, data management, data science, data visualization, or related disciplines
  • Minimum three to five years' experience with techniques and technologies for engaging with data
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the life cycle of digital objects, the key concepts related to architecture and long term digital storage and preservation, awareness of preservation strategies and standards, best practices, and both established and emerging technologies for digital preservation
  • An understanding of the research process and data requirements as demonstrated by academic or work experience
  • Knowledge of basic project management techniques with a focus on technology driven research projects
  • Demonstrated knowledge of issues and technical challenges related to data management/curation, including format migration, preservation, metadata, data retrieval and use issues
  • Knowledge of digital preservation and metadata use and ability to apply appropriately depending on the context
  • Knowledge of diverse digital formats, management and preservation technologies
  • Ability to continuously master new applications
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills, facilitating work in a team environment
  • Excellent written and presentation skills, including the ability to contribute to the drafting of grant applications and project proposals
  • High level problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and professionally with staff at all levels as well as with faculty and students

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in one or more fields relevant to data curation and/or technology
  • Experience with repository platforms, content management systems, and data manipulation tools
  • Prior experience in data visualization and/or data-mining
  • Working knowledge or advanced training with SQL
  • Working knowledge of Linked Data principles and scripting languages, such as Python, JavaScript, PHP, XSLT, and APIs
  • Experience programming on UNIX-based systems using LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP) stack or equivalent
  • Experience in deploying, updating, and maintaining web-based systems developed with PHP, JAVA, and Ruby in LAMP stack environments
  • Experience with data repositories like Dataverse, DSpace or CKAN
  • Ability to write documentation and communicate effectively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated familiarity with metadata standards for datasets
