Position Overview

Principal Gifts within Development & Alumni Engagement is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Advisor.

Reporting to the Director, Office of Principal Gifts, this position works closely with the Associate Vice President, Campaign Management, Corporate and Foundation Relations, the President's Office, faculty-based fundraisers, the central Development Office, and other relevant areas of the university. The Principal Gifts Advisor is involved in the execution of the Principal Gifts program and has access to highly sensitive and confidential information. Early morning, evening and weekend hours are, on occasion, required.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Prepare plans, notes, reports and correspondence in support of President, AVP Campaign Management and Director, Principal Gift's activities; this includes creating briefing notes for donor meetings, analyzing research, developing stewardship and recognition plans for donor prospects, drafting proposals, terms of reference or gift agreements, and preparing subsequent updates based on outcome of meetings
  • Prepare strategy for and help secure key high-level internal and external meetings for the Development Team
  • Prepare, draft proposals; collate and interpret available research data pertinent to development of relationships with potential donors
  • Take initiative to identify the stakeholders involved in the implementation, execution and reporting of fundraising plans, and facilitate consultation
  • Assist with managing the Principal Gifts stewardship program including working directly with internal and external stakeholders to ensure gifts are recognized via appropriate stewardship and recognition practices (stewardship reports, thank you letters, donor recognition events and naming dedications; launches of initiatives; accountability and reporting)
  • Maintain the list of prospects and donors for principal gifts and facilitate proactive review of development opportunities
  • Assist with principal gift donor recognition events and stewardship activities
  • Create appropriate data and content for presentations, and collateral materials
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant University policies, procedures and processes
  • Ensure all appropriate donor records are maintained within the guidelines of FOIP
  • Create and interpret sophisticated data queries and reports from Raiser's Edge
  • Ensure all stakeholders are provided with up to date information on key relationships
  • Identify and resolve complex and confidential problems efficiently and independently while interacting professionally and effectively with all levels of the Development Team, the Central Development Office, Financial Services, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Student Awards and Financial Aid and external constituencies
  • Create and implement fundraising strategies with principal gift donors and prospects, particularly those with multiple interests
  • Manage principal gift relations with other university units to develop and assess joint activities
  • Coordinate and plan engagement activities such as campus and site visits, presentations, luncheons, etc.
  • Utilizing a thorough understanding of the university's priorities, build productive relationship with faculty and other staff at the university to successfully identify leading academic projects to be presented to potential donors
  • Actively promote and market services to university stakeholders: faculties, non-academic units, President's office, etc.
  • Responsible for project management elements of Principal Gifts portfolio, such as managing SharePoint and BaseCamp sites
  • Liaise with Research team to meet the needs of the Principal Gifts portfolio, as well as proactively prospect for new donors
  • Facilitate collaborative project management delivery of donor advancement strategies within cross-functional departments

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A university degree or equivalent experience, with a minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in fundraising or related work in a not-for-profit setting is expected
  • A working knowledge of the university environment is a definite asset
  • Honesty, integrity, high standards, understanding and commitment to an academic environment, innovation, ability to motivate others, and a passion for what you do
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and unwavering attention to detail
  • Excellent listening skills, highly developed organizational, analytical and problem solving skills, good negotiation skills and the, ability to manage relationships
  • Sound judgment and decision making capabilities and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as required
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to lead and direct others as required
