Position Overview

The Application and Web Services Team in the Information Technologies is currently seeking a Full-time Regular GIS Analyst .

This position is within the Applications and Web Services team in Information Technologies, reporting to the Associate Director, Applications and Web Services.  The position will require working closely with staff and a multitude of internal and external stakeholders (e.g. academic, students, and contractors).

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Development and Maintenance

  • Manage data, model spatial databases and maintain spatial data (consistency, accuracy, updating)
  • Develop and maintain custom software, web GIS, create maps and design GIS interfaces
  • Provide technical support and consultation to people in other faculties and departments on campus
  • Maintain current and timely communication with immediate supervisor of activities, issues and progress with projects.
  • Stay current with latest technology, developing trends and approaches
  • Design and communicate, with users, the stakeholders needs for individual projects

Functional and Usability Testing

  • All solutions are adequately tested according to test plan documentation


  • Demonstrate friendly, complete, competent customer service and support at all times in all situations
  • Demonstrate a willingness to participate in Team environment for information, skills and knowledge sharing
  • Demonstrate a willingness to keep technical knowledge current

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Minimum of a BSc in a GIS field (Geography or Geomatics)
  • 2-5 years of professional experience relating to GIS
  • Strong computer skills in Windows environment
  • Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Positive attitude with a strong desire to succeed
  • Experience with data collection, tracking, measuring, and reporting
  • A high degree of accuracy and attention to details is required
  • Proficient in defining and executing the steps required to build geospatial solutions that meet a variety of business needs
  • Capable of working with different survey grid systems and coordinate reference systems
  • Skilled in maintaining and updating a Corporate GIS database, conducting spatial data conversions, and working with imagery data and large volumes of digital files
  • Strong understanding of modeling large irrigations systems (hydraulic, electronic communications, etc)
  • ITIL certification an asset
  • Must also demonstrate the ability to effectively manage multiple tasks of varying complexity, ability to work autonomously and under pressure, as required
  • Require a general knowledge of the culture and operating procedures of the university
  • Technology specific qualifications include:
    • 2-5 years working with ESRI ArcGIS, ArcSDE and ArcSERVER
    • Proficiency with ArcGIS10 (or higher) and Microsoft Office products
    • Ability to program in Python
    • Familiarity with HTML, CSS and JavaScript
    • Familiarity with Microsoft SQL Server and SQL queries
