Position Overview

Technology, Discovery and Digital Services in Libraries and Cultural Resources invites applications for a UI Developer. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 5 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Manager, Digital Projects & Web Development within Technology, Discovery and Digital Services. The UI Developer is an expert designer and web developer who creates user focused websites in support of multidisciplinary research projects.
The UI Developer collaborates with team members by participating in daily stand-up meetings, drawing on the team's expertise with existing systems, and supporting others through instant messenger and contributing code to our shared GIT repository.
The UI Developer typically operates during normal business hours, however there can be calls to respond to critical issues at any time of the day or day of the week.



Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):


  • Create mock-ups and web templates for applications
  • Create digital presentations that integrate data, text, graphics, sound, and 3D models from original concept to final product
  • Produce, source, edit and integrate professional quality photos, video and audio content
  • Interpret client needs and produce concepts and designs
  • Incorporate usability best practices
  • Perform regular usability testing and make modifications to user interfaces as needed
  • Incorporate University of Calgary branding guidelines


  • Develop new user-facing features
  • Build reusable code and libraries for future use
  • Ensure the technical feasibility of UI/UX designs
  • Optimize application for maximum speed and scalability
  • Collaborate with other team members and stakeholders
  • Develop high quality responsive webpages
  • Incorporate best search engine optimization practices into templates and pages
  • Provide insight and guidance on site architecture and navigation systems and implement changes as required
  • Thoroughly test code before making any changes to a system


  • Inform Manager, clients and business owners of any problems
  • Communicate effectively with system vendors when required
  • Participate in daily stand-up meetings providing what you accomplished on previous day, what you will do on present day and any obstacles you are facing
  • Document all processes and applications you support in detail
  • Professionally respond to help desk tickets and provide necessary details and documentation of why problem occurred
  • Other Duties as assigned

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in web development or digital design
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience designing for highly trafficked areas
  • Outstanding creativity (examples of design contributions to a minimum of three projects in the digital space will be requested)
  • Demonstrated currency with digital design practices and user-testing
  • Ability to create custom themes for Wordpress
  • Demonstrated experience with PHP
  • Demonstrated ability to design for a variety of audiences and spaces
  • Expert knowledge of HTML, CSS and Javascript
  • Demonstrated experience with one or more JavaScript frameworks such as jQuery, AngularJS, D3.js or Bootstrap.js
  • Demonstrated experience with responsive design
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated flexibility to deal with constant change
  • Proven ability to set priorities and complete tasks within specified timelines is required
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills; effective technical problem solving
  • Proven ability to leverage content management systems to achieve desired outcomes
