Solutions Architect, IT - Architecture, Information Technologies

Position Overview

Information Technologies is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Solutions Architect.

We are offering an exciting opportunity to work as a Solutions Architect in a new IT Architecture practice at the University of Calgary. This position reports to the Director of Security and Architecture. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work in a diverse and dynamic environment and help develop a full-fledged Enterprise Architecture practice.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Solutions Architecture

  • Design and lead the implementation of a solutions architecture across a group of specific business applications or technologies based on enterprise business strategy, business capabilities and business requirements
  • Take on a “practice lead” role in specific solution spaces such as video, telecommunications, collaboration, big data, analytics, high performance computing, learning management systems, research management systems, education support, research support, ERP, facilities management software, laboratory information management systems, web, digital marketing, fund development, lab management, clinical software, or functional areas such as application, data and information, infrastructure or business architecture
  • Manage and develop the architecture for a broad scope of projects, working closely with operational or project solution designers that manage and design architecture for a individual projects or initiatives
  • Provide consulting support to operational or project solution designers, or architects within programs and projects to ensure the project is aligned with the overall enterprise architecture
  • Work with operational and project solution designers to develop solution templates or solution patterns that accelerate solution development and support architectural principles, guidelines, standards and roadmaps
  • Identify the organizational impact (for example, on skills, processes, structures or culture) and financial impact of the solutions architecture
  • Document all solution architecture design and analysis work and maintain the architecture repository

Enterprise Architecture

  • Monitor the current-state solution portfolio to identify deficiencies through aging of the technologies used by the application, or misalignment with business requirements
  • Understand business drivers and business capabilities (future and current state), and determine corresponding enterprise system designs and change requirements to drive the organization's targeted business outcomes
  • Analyze the business-IT environment (run, grow and transform the business) to detect critical deficiencies, and recommend solutions for improvement (systems of record, differentiation and innovation)
  • Consult with application and infrastructure development projects to fit systems or infrastructure to architecture, and identify when it is necessary to modify projects to accommodate the solutions architecture
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of the IT architectural practice

Understand and Interpret External Education Trends to Direct Change

  • Understand technology trends and the practical application of existing, new, and emerging technologies to enable new and evolving business and operating models, especially in the higher education space
  • Analyze the technology industry, competitors and market trends, and determine their potential impact on the enterprise
  • Work with stakeholders to develop business capability and technology roadmaps

Develop Architectural Governance and Supports

  • Understand, augment and advocate the principles of information technology strategies, including negotiation with partners to comply with those policies
  • Define principles, guidelines and standards to ensure solution decisions are aligned with the enterprise's future-state architecture vision
  • Design and direct governance activities associated with ensuring solutions architecture assurance and compliance
  • Work closely with the program management office (PMO) or project management office to ensure the execution of plans corresponds with what is being promised

Technology Evaluation

  • Facilitate the evaluation and selection of technology product standards and services, as well as the design of standard and custom software configurations

Qualifications / Requirements:

Credentials and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Systems Analysis or a related study, or equivalent experience. A Master’s degree is an asset
  • Proficiency or familiarity with TOGAF, COBIT, ITIL, PMBOK, BABOK, BPMBOK, Lean six sigma CMM, PCI-DSS, ISO 42010, ISO 27001, and other IT related ISO standards is an asset
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience and a depth of knowledge in at least two IT solution development disciplines, including technical architecture, network management, application development, middleware, database management or operations. A breadth of knowledge over these areas is desirable
  • The role is generalized, however, specific experience and knowledge of best practices in technology areas such as video, telecommunications, collaboration, big data, research and analytics, high performance computing, learning management systems, research management systems, education support, research support, ERP, facilities management software, laboratory information management systems, web, digital marketing, fund development, lab management, clinical software or other systems critical to supporting a large modern research university is desirable
  • Exposure to multiple, diverse technologies and processing environments
  • Good understanding of strategic, and new and emerging technology trends, industry best practices and the practical application of existing, new and emerging technologies to new and evolving business and operating models
  • Familiarity with or ability to quickly understand the University’s diverse environment and the core facets of the University’s business: research, teaching and learning, and administration
  • Understanding of agile methods and processes, and capability of supporting agile project teams by providing advice and guidance on opportunities, impact and risks, taking account of technical and architectural debt

  • Good facilitation, survey and other requirements gathering skills
  • Knowledge of all components of an enterprise technical architecture
  • Knowledge of financial models and budgeting
  • Excellent understanding of application development methodologies and infrastructure and network architecture including best practices
  • Ability to work with operational and project IT staff as well as external contractors, vendors and consultants
  • Experience performing technology, standard and best practice research and leveraging resources such as Gartner

  • Organizationally savvy, with an ability to understand the University’s political climate and navigate political waters
  • Ability to communicate difficult concepts, influence, persuade, and negotiate with colleagues in IT and without to adopt different points of view
  • Ability to understand the long-term ("big picture") and short-term perspectives of situations
  • Ability to translate future-state business capabilities and requirements objectives into practical next step solution architecture requirements
  • Ability to balance fit-for-purpose, architectural fit and both immediate and long-term economics of a solution
  • Ability to propose and estimate the financial impact of solution architecture alternatives

  • Ability to quickly comprehend the functions and capabilities of new technologies
  • Proven ability to work well with others
