Position Description

University of Calgary Continuing Education (UCCE) houses one of Canada's largest and most successful continuing education departments. It is a multi-disciplinary unit offering diploma, certificate and non-degree programs in the classroom and online through technologies for course delivery.

In support of the University of Calgary's core principles and financial objectives, Continuing Education is an academic unit with a mandate to respond to the needs of the community through the design, development and delivery of high-quality lifelong learning opportunities.

Each year, UCCE serves over 20,000 adult learners and offers more than one thousand courses taught by hundreds of instructors—all experts in their fields. It is expected to fund, through revenue generation, the majority of its operational costs while contributing financially to the university.

The success of University of Calgary Continuing Education in meeting its business target in a competitive environment is dependent upon effectively serving students and by providing high-quality instruction and programs.

Position Description

University of Calgary Continuing Education is currently recruiting for an Instructor (contract (term) position) to teach the following Python Level 2: Python for Data Analysis (classroom) course during the 2018 Spring Session:

ICT 782 Python Level 2: Python for Data Analysis (classroom)

Thursdays - 18:00 - 21:00, Classroom

April 12 – June 14, 2018

Course Description for ICT 782 Python Level 2: Python for Data Analysis:

Take your Python programming skills to the next level by learning to develop Python code for data analysis. Python is used to shape data for analysis, apply techniques to analyze statistics, and use data to make informed business decisions.

Through an introduction to Python libraries, students will focus on writing Python code specifically for data manipulation, processing and analysis.

Course Level Learning Outcomes:

  • Manipulate, process, clean and crunch data using data sets
  • Write code for data analysis using the Python language
  • e Python maths and sciences libraries
  • Perform fast mathematical and logical operation on large data sets
  • Convert, manipulate and rearrange file text data into data sets format for data analysis
  • Transform data sets to different forms for financial and economical analytical applications

Scope of Responsibilities (high level)

  • Create effective lessons plans, develop content, learning activities, presentations, assignments, evaluations, examinations.
  • Utilize Desire2Learn for all course materials, assessment and, student communication.

Qualifications

  • A degree in a related field or equivalent and work experience in the field are desirable.
  • Previous teaching experience is essential; post-secondary teaching experience is preferred.
  • Previous experience utilizing Learning Management Systems such as Desire2Learn, Adobe Connect, Blackboard or Moodle, is preferred.

Session dates are during the Spring Term 2018 (April – June 2018) and may vary in length (approximately 10 weeks). Courses will be offered classroom only. 

These instructional positions are non-credit teaching appointments and, as such, are contract positions without benefits (other than those required by Employment Standards).
