Educational Development Consultant, Taylor Institute for Teaching & Learning

Position Description

The Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning at the University of Calgary invites applications for a limited-term, two-year academic appointment as Educational Development Consultant.

Background

The Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning is dedicated to better understanding and improving student learning, and the teaching approaches and practices that affect student learning. This two-pronged commitment puts both instructors and students at the centre of its work to engage in reflection, conversation, exploration, innovation, and research. The Institute thus promotes the teaching development of instructors, high-impact student experiences such as inquiry-based and experiential learning, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.  The Taylor Institute’s building was designed according to the values of transparency, collaboration, flexibility, and intention in teaching and learning. Its position at the centre of campus supports its work to facilitate conversations, build communities, link networks, and catalyze a culture of evidence-based teaching and learning across the University.

Position

This position will provide leadership and expertise in developing and facilitating research-informed educational development initiatives and supporting program-level curriculum development and quality assurance processes.  The successful candidate will focus predominantly on consulting with academic programs to engage in research-informed curriculum review and quality assurance processes. In this role, they will collaborate with faculty to accomplish the following:

  • Align learning outcomes, approaches to teaching and learning, and assessment strategies;
  • Provide consultation and expertise in areas such as critically examining the alignment of learning outcomes, learning activities and assessment strategies;
  • Lead program-level curriculum review and mapping processes;
  • Develop strategies to collect, analyze, interpret and discuss curriculum review data from multiple perspectives and sources;
  • Developing action plans for improvement. 

They will also collaborate with faculty and staff across the Taylor Institute to:

  • Lead and/or contribute to educational development programs for graduate students, postdoctoral students, and instructors across career stages;
  • Consult with individual faculty to strengthen teaching and learning approaches;
  • Collaborate with faculty and academic units to support educational innovation and change;
  • Provide leadership and guidance in the educational development activities of the EDU, TI, and other academic units;
  • Be engaged in scholarship related to educational development and teaching and learning in postsecondary education.

This position is a limited-term two-year appointment at University of Calgary and will commence as soon as possible.

Requirements

Applicants must have a doctoral degree, with evidence of strong teaching and educational development abilities.  They must have a minimum of three years’ experience in educational and/or curriculum development (at the program-level) with a demonstrated ability to support post-secondary educators. The successful candidate must possess a strong educational development philosophy, and a clear understanding of how to apply these principles and ideas to help strengthen teaching and learning in post-secondary education. Applicants must demonstrate knowledge and experience related to program-level curriculum development in a post-secondary context; the ability to plan, implement and evaluate educational/curriculum development initiatives; and the ability to engage colleagues in meaningful dialogue and decision-making processes about teaching and learning in post-secondary education.  Also essential are strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills; self-awareness and a commitment to critical reflection and ongoing professional development; the ability to explore and implement novel solutions to complex pedagogical challenges; an understanding of theories and literature related to postsecondary teaching and learning; an appreciation for how institutional cultures and disciplinary differences apply to their educational development work; and, knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative research methodologies as they relate to the scholarship of educational development and/or teaching and learning in post-secondary education.
