Position Overview

The Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a Research Assistant: Mobile Sensing. This Full-time Fixed Short Term position is for approximately 5 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Primary Investigator. The position is comprised of technical and research functions related to their Mobile Emissions Sensing research. General instructions will be provided and the employee will need to make decisions about how the work will be completed within set timelines. The nominal University of Calgary workweek is 35 hours. Working conditions include fieldwork and will sometimes involve irregular hours such as weekend and evening work. Fieldwork will sometimes involve exposure to inclement weather and the potential for wildlife encounters.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Ability to execute assigned and scheduled tasks, demonstrating initiative and with results that contribute to the success of the overall research project
  • Document and maintain established procedures (e.g. routine data collection and project support), including but not limited to the assurance of a hazard free working environment
  • Good relationships are established and maintained with all research group, external partners and Department members
  • Provide technical support to faculty, post-doctoral scholars and graduate students in the Primary Investigator's research group
  • Maintain database for field and laboratory data and update field and laboratory protocols as required
  • Assist the Primary Investigator and the graduate students in his research group with collection of field data
  • Prepare data and other information for publication and public presentation
  • Prepare scientific articles for submission to peer-reviewed journals

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Graduate level experience (MSc, MEng or equivalent) in geography, engineering, geoscience, or equivalent experience are required
  • A minimum of 1 to 2 years' work experience in a research program is required
  • Demonstrated track-record of multi-sensor integration on mobile platforms and experience with methane sensing technology
  • Experience with methane sensors, vision systems, and fieldwork is an asset
  • Effectively time manage and determine priorities
  • Effective oral and written communication skills are necessary
