Histology Technician, Diagnostic Services Unit, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

Position Overview

The Diagnostic Services Unit in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Histology Technician.

The Histology Technologist is involved in the maintenance and control of the histology laboratory as well as the preparation and staining of tissue for study by UCVM pathologists, university researchers, and students. Adherence to DSU Quality Management System practices and Standard Operating Procedures, and good documentation skills are required. Entering appropriate information into the laboratory database may be required. The incumbent is responsible for, and is expected to perform, a variety of complex tissue processing and staining procedures with the knowledge and ability to produce high quality microscopic slides for use in diagnosis, teaching, and research.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Ensures proper sample accessioning and labeling, and maintains various forms of documentation for all tissue samples.
  • Assists with specimen gross trimming and decalcifying bone tissue.
  • Prepares various tissue samples including but not limited to embedding tissue samples, cutting (microtomy) of embedded tissue, staining specimens using routine (Hematoxylin and Eosin) as well as special stains, using histochemical techniques, and preparing slides (cover-slips and labeling).
  • Involved in preparation of cytology slides (e.g. staining and cover-slips) and implementing and performing immunohistochemical procedures.
  • Prepares solutions and reagents for special stains and other procedures as required.
  • Ensures safe operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments, including associated documentation.
  • Adheres to DSU Quality Management System practices, Standard Operating Procedures, and documentation.
  • Works and communicates collaboratively in a team environment with the DSU Ancillary Services Supervisor, and other DSU personnel.
  • Receives samples and animals submitted to the DSU in a timely and professional manner.
  • Creates and maintains accurate records (accessioning) of animals and samples received into the DSU as required.
  • Advises the DSU Manager of any incident or occupational illness as outlined in University of Calgary Safety and Security protocols.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Related post-secondary credential.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a histology laboratory environment is required.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered, such as relevant courses with certification by the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS).
  • Experience, technical background, knowledge, technical skills, and proficiency in histological techniques and using equipment related to histology.  Experience in animal histology would be considered an asset.
  • Experience in immunohistochemistry and cytology would be considered assets.
  • Familiarity with basic anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology.
  • Ability to interact with members of the public and other members of UCVM and the University community in a courteous, empathetic, and professional manner.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral), organization, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and function effectively as part of a team.
  • Understanding of and ability to work using industry specific laboratory safety standards.
  • Proficiency with computers, excellent MS Office Suite skills as well as communication, organization, interpersonal, customer service skills.
