Position Overview

The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Position Title. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 20 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Data Scientist reports to the Director and Associate Director of the Alberta Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR) Methods & Development Platform. This Data Scientist will work in an interdisciplinary research team conducting cutting-edge health research focusing on the development of methodology for health data science. The Data Scientist is integral to support the research team using innovative research methods.


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Work closely with the members of SPOR Methods & Development Platform and provide research support and consultation for research projects
  • Manage large health databases and maintain the clear documentation
  • Analyze large databases, including clinical database, administrative health data, electronic medical records using a variety of statistical methods
  • Develop and implement advanced analytic methods (e.g. data mining, machine learning, statistical analysis, predictive modeling, visual analytics, natural language processing.)
  • Ensure high quality innovative statistical and data analytical services for the Methods Platform and support the development of new research initiatives and research proposal development
  • Provide analytic support for multiple research projects ad assist team members in grant applications
  • Explain technical concepts in lay terms and develop educational materials and workshops to advance research capabilities in data science
  • Prepare written summaries of data analyses which include figures and tables, as needed for scientific presentations and research manuscripts
  • Assist with plans and designs for specialized applications to meet the needs of operations, research, and services
  • Collaborate with team members to meet project checkpoints and accomplish team objectives
  • Provide statistical consultation for research project development and analysis
  • Take responsibility for analyses and completion of research projects
  • Write summaries of data analyses as needed for scientific presentations and manuscripts
  • Lead and support publication of research results in peer review journal
  • Manage/manipulate and link large health databases, such as clinical databases, administrative health data, and electronic medical records
  • Design data collection instruments and provide data solutions as required for research projects
  • Work with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews
  • Perform statistical analysis using various methods and provides creative and new analytic solutions for complex and challenging research questions
  • Provide the statistics and statistical programming workshop and training for the graduate students, clinical fellows, physicians, and other researchers

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • MSc or PhD in Physics, Math, or Computer Science
  • Graduate, undergraduate degree, or advanced knowledge of statistics and/or big data/data mining analysis methods are assets
  • At least 3 years of experience in health data analysis and research
  • Strong knowledge of SQL and relational databases
  • Experience in study design, documentation, and complex longitudinal statistical analyses
  • Project management skills are an asset
  • Work experience in a Linux environment (especially in a computer cluster environment) is an asset
  • Expert working knowledge of SAS, STATA, JAVA, R, Python, and/or other statistical programming languages
  • Ability to analyze large, complex, unstructured sets of data using machine learning, data mining, natural language processing, or other innovative techniques
  • Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization
  • Advanced data management and cleaning skills are required
  • Expert working knowledge of health data, clinical registry, and administrative data
  • Strong knowledge about statistical analysis including but not limited to sample size calculation, regression analysis, logistic regression, survival analysis
  • Strong interest to creatively develop new statistical methods and use knowledge to answer real research questions generated by health services researchers and clinicians
  • Ability to effectively communicate with colleagues from various disciplines and external collaborators within a complex initiative, including clearly communicating statistical concepts in layman’s language to health researchers and clinicians required
  • Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on analysis and study design
  • Excellent, organizational, time management, interpersonal, and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to efficiently organize multiple priorities
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
  • Advanced or expert skills in Microsoft Office Suite
