Director, Active Living & Outdoor Centre, Faculty of Kinesiology

Position Overview

The Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Director, Active Living & Outdoor Centre.

Active Living is responsible for providing programs and services that lead the way to healthy Active Living at University of Calgary and within our community. Active Living and the Outdoor Centre offer a wide range of indoor and outdoor recreational activities and provide unique curriculum, programs and services, making it one of the largest and most diverse post-secondary operations in North America.

The Director, Active Living, reports to the Dean, Faculty of Kinesiology, and is responsible for the effective management of Active Living and the Outdoor Centre. The Director is responsible for strategic planning, development of business and operational plans, financial oversight, and leadership of a team of management, professional, and unionized staff.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Initiate and steward the development and maintenance of the Active Living and Outdoor Center Strategic Plan
  • Develop annual operating plans, which align with the Faculty of Kinesiology Strategic Plan and monitor to ensure execution is effective
  • Drive revenue generation in keeping with the vision of Faculty of Kinesiology and Active Living
  • Lead a high-performance team of management and professional staff, and unionized staff
  • Develop and implement a workplace-staffing plan to guide resourcing levels
  • Create an environment to support knowledge-sharing, innovation, teamwork, and staff development to ensure that service levels meet or exceed expectations
  • Manage complex issues and challenging interpersonal interactions with skill, composure and diplomacy
  • Supervise staff including recruitment, onboarding, work allocation, scheduling, delegation of work, performance management, coaching for performance and disciplinary action up to and including dismissal
  • Develop and implement short and long-range financial plans with a focus on revenue generation and financial sustainability
  • Develop and manage annual operating budgets for approval by the Dean
  • Build and maintain external relationships and partnerships with indoor and outdoor related companies and partners including local school boards and land management agencies
  • Maintain a strong and positive relationship with the media

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A recognized post-secondary education in business management or related fields. Degree or graduate degree preferred
  • Five years of experience related to senior management/leadership, preferably in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities (recreation)
  • A demonstrated and progressive track record in a leadership role, budget management with an emphasis on revenue generation and program development in a post-secondary or not-for-profit business environment
  • Strong negotiation and problem solving skills that are both diplomatic and effective
  • Strategic planning experience
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
  • A high degree of problem solving skills and the ability to conduct oneself in a positive and professional manner
  • Strong organizational skills, the ability to handle a large and diverse workload and meet deadlines
  • Previous supervisory experience including experience mentoring and motivating staff
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of post-secondary business operations, including provincial and federal legislation
  • Experience in managing in a unionized environment is an asset
