Position Overview

The Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a WCMC Metabolomics Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The WCMC Metabolomics Technician will operate the high-level instrumentation present in the Calgary Metabolomics Research Facility.  This position will prepare samples, analyze their composition, and interpret complex datasets generated from metabolomics analyses.

Will report to the Principal Investigator.

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Perform daily sample preparation tasks
  • Perform daily MS analyses and data analysis tasks
  • Perform biweekly maintenance on instrumentation
  • Report daily/weekly progress to senior CMRF staff; report weekly/monthly to WCMC staff
  • Meet weekly with WCMC researchers
  • Prepare scientific and budgetary reports for WCMC metabolomics projects
  • Help design specialized MS applications to meet the needs of operations, research and services
  • Prepare samples, collect spectra and analyze data as directed by the Principal Investigator
  • Attending and participating in laboratory meetings and professional development activities as directed by the senior research staff
  • Assist in tracking projects and expenses for reporting to the manager(s) including the WCMC consultant
  • Participate in the design and development of precision equipment and processes for metabolomics
  • Recommend changes to methods, procedures, and practices within the metabolomics lab
  • Provision of in-time high quality LC-MS data for metabolome characterization including compound identification and quantification
  • Provision of mass spectrometric data for select projects involving small molecules
  • Maintenance and operation of technical equipment in the laboratory in support of data provision (mass spectrometers, LC systems, informatics installations etc.)
  • Duties may require work in various locations (Biological Sciences and Cumming School of Medicine)
  • Delivery of written and verbal reports to various stakeholders (clients/collaborators)
  • Delivery of financial and operation data/statistics to various stakeholders including Manager and WCMC Consultant
     

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • MSc or PhD in biochemistry, chemistry, or related discipline
  • A high level of technical competency in biological mass spectrometry. Direct experience in metabolomics is highly desirable
  • Ability to learn specialized bioinformatics techniques. Direct experience is desirable
  • Superior analytical skills with regard to sample handling and preparation
  • Direct expertise in LC-MS: preferably on Thermo Fisher Q-Exactive platforms
  • Strong familiarity with standard bioinformatics tools for biological MS analysis
  • Ability to perform moderate manual activities including filling/moving liquid Nitrogen dewars to support instrument operations
  • In-depth knowledge of theory and practical applications of mass spectrometry and/or metabolism
  • Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization
  • Demonstrated communication, organization, problem solving and interpersonal skills
  • Must be open to learning and development, willing to accept new challenging assignments and work effectively in a team environment
  • Possess superior communication skills
