Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This is a qualitative research position that will be reporting to the project Principal Investigator and Research Coordinator.  The Research Assistant will be responsible for providing research administrative support to Can-SOLVE Triple-I Study, Phase One (qualitative focus groups and interviews).  The purpose of the Triple-I study, Phase One is to describe positive experiences and challenges experienced by hemodialysis patients/family members and healthcare providers and to identify patient priorities for research on new innovations to improve information, interaction and individualization of care in hemodialysis.

This position will require occasional travel within Alberta and/or work at hemodialysis/research clinics within Calgary as required by the project/research group.

Recurring part-time employees are engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.  This position is approximately 21 hours a week.

 

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Provides administrative support to the study team in a timely and professional manner
  • Typing, faxing, filing, photocopying and the distribution of study related materials
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with all team members, study participants, project collaborators and stakeholders
  • Ability to seek out answers to questions and problems and demonstrate assigned and scheduled tasks are done on own initiative
  • Ability to follow instructions and study standard operating procedures to ensure a high degree of accuracy in all aspects of work
  • Maintain established program procedures and documentation in an organized, up-to-date and accurate manner
  • Proven ability to deal with sensitive issues while maintaining high levels of customer service and confidentiality
  • Manages and tracks incoming / outgoing study correspondence and follows-up in appropriate and timely manner
  • Recruits study participants
  • Review consent forms and participant surveys for completion, follow up on missing information as needed and enter data into electronic data capture forms appropriately
  • Work with Research Coordinator and Office Administrative staff to organize and assist with the logistics and conduct of participant focus group sessions and interviews
  • Participate as observer/note taker in focus groups
  • Review focus group and interview transcripts for accuracy and correct as necessary
  • Document procedures and processes that will contribute to development of standard operating procedures
     

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a research-oriented discipline, an asset
  • 1 - 3 years of research and/or office assistant support experience with emphasis on administrative and organizational skills required for supporting a research study
  • 1-3 years recording observation data
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio), proficiency with email and use of the Internet
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to manage multiple tasks/priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work under time constraints and adapt quickly to change
  • Able to work constructively and cooperatively in a team environment
  • Willing to work flexible hours and occasionally travel within Alberta and/or work at hemodialysis/research clinics within Calgary as required by the project/research group
