Position Overview

The Department of Cardiac Science in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Senior Programmer/Analyst APPROACH.. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position will resolve highly complex problems where there is little or no documentation.  It will develop, support, and maintain the various APPROACH applications and systems, both software and hardware by evaluating client needs, analyzing requirement and developing software systems. This position will require frequent interaction with internal and external clients.    

APPROACH is a practical, effective and patient-focused initiative and the APPROACH software is used throughout AHS sites as well as numerous hospital sites across the country. Coronary artery disease, the leading cause of death and disability in Canada, continues to be our prime focus.  The APPROACH mission is to collect and process information to improve cardiac care for all Albertans and stakeholders across Canada.

This position will require monthly travel to the APPROACH IT central office in Edmonton.  Position reports to the Primary Investigator for APPROACH.

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Plan, organize, and conduct their day-to-day activities as they see fit as considered an authority in this field
  • Provide leadership on the APPROACH software strategic planning
  • Initiate changes to policies and practice where appropriate
  • Provide leadership to the development and maintenance of APPROACH applications as assigned through on-going projects
  • Provide leadership in the technical implementation of APPROACH projects at work with technical staff, business analysts, QA and management to investigate in the implementation of client projects, development of new product features, product upgrade and resolution of day to day support issues
  • Enhances staff accomplishments and competence by planning delivery of solutions; answering technical and procedural questions for less experienced team members; teaching improved processes; mentoring team members
  • Provide mentorship to other team members
  • Analyze business requirements and provide technical design expertise
  • As assigned lead all aspects of a Software Development Lifecycle and experience working in an agile development environment
  • Develop software solutions including new modules.  Maintain guidelines/standards by writing and updating documentation for policies and procedures
  • Confirms program operation by conducting tests; modifying program sequence and/or codes

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • University Degree in Computer Science or an acceptable combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 9+ years’ experience working in software development role
  • Significant experience in all aspects of a Software Development Lifecycle and experience working in an agile development environment
  • Mastery in working with applications in multiple environments (Win7, Win2K3, Windows Server 2014,Citrix)
  • Mastery in application design and working in the .Net development environment (C#, JavaScript, WPF, ASP, HTML, HTML5, Visual Studio)
  • Proficiency in working with MS SQL environments, stored procedures, database design
  • Understanding of HL7 interface development including python scripting preferred
  • Understanding C++, C, Java, XML, Angular, PERL
  • Proficiency with network environments including design, maintenance, and protocols
  • Working knowledge of Active Directory is an advantage
  • VMWare knowledge/experience is required
  • Visual Basic 6 knowledge/experience is preferred
  • Strong attention to detail with exceptionally strong skills in analysis and design
  • Strong problem solving and debugging skills
  • Strong verbal, written, and communication skills including experience in working with external stakeholders and clients
  • Ability to work under minimal direction and ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Ability to work after-hours at times especially during production release deployments
  • Medical / cardiac terminology and basic knowledge
