Position Overview

The Department of Geomatics Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Research Associate.  This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Under the supervision of Principal Investigator, the Research Associates will play a key role in all activities undertaken by the research team spanning from hands on technical tasks to visioning.

The Research Associate has an extensive knowledge in groundwater, hydrological, water quality and climate change and will be responsible for the research on the modeling system design for the Lower Athabasca sub-basin and for achieving the research goals listed above. They will prepare and submit documentation and other deliverables, technical and financial, required by funding agencies and collaborators.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Take responsibility for successful completion of projects from the conception stage through the submission of all contract deliverables and project closure
  • Represent research team at meetings, conferences, and seminar's
  • Full responsibility for quality control
  • Conduct research and provide documentation for use in scholarly publications
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management with the campus community
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Data collection for the Lower Athabasca River watershed in northern Alberta
  • Data preparation, interpretation and analysis for the watershed and its main tributaries
  • Carry out model development
  • Calibration and validation of the model
  • Model simulation and outcome analysis
  • Work in collaboration with government and industry partners
  • Participate in team meetings with government and industry partners to report progress on the project
  • Engage with multidisciplinary team members to define technical and functional requirements
  • Write and submit scientific papers
  • Provide presentations at international and national conferences

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD in a relevant scientific discipline related to watershed sciences with a focus on groundwater/surface water modelling (e.g. environmental sciences, civil engineering, water resources, hydrology, hydrogeology, mathematics etc.) along with minimum of 2 years of practical experience in groundwater/surface water modelling
  • Some experience in hydrology, water quality, land-use change and climate change modelling is desirable
  • Proven track record in the production of peer-reviewed scientific publications, scientific reports, and research proposals
  • Able to perform detailed design, documentation and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of related technical procedures
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Demonstrated communication, organization, innovation and interpersonal skills
  • Advanced or expert skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), internet skills
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
  • Strong demonstrated knowledge of the fundamental theories in groundwater flow systems, aquifer mapping, numerical modeling, groundwater-surface water interaction
  • Strong demonstrated experience with groundwater/surface modeling, preferably MODFLOW/EFDC
  • Knowledge and experience with:
    o Non-point source SWAT model
    o Water quality and oil sands related background in the oil sands region of Alberta
    o  Knowledge of EPEA, Land use framework, and Water Act
    o Knowledge of databases (e.g. VBA, SQL etc.) and programming and other scripting languages (e.g. Origin pro, Maple Fortran, .Net, C/C++, MATLAB, Java, Python, IDL etc.)
    o Demonstrated strong ESRI ArcGIS and ENVI skills
