Position Overview

The Office of Principal Gifts within Development & Alumni Engagement is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Director, Office of Principal Gifts.

The Principal Gifts function, reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Campaign Management directly supports the President and other senior officials (offices of the Provost, Vice-Presidents, Chancellor and Chair) to implement a focused strategy for gifts in the $1 million + range from individuals, corporations and foundations.  The function also manages the university's relationship with community members who have multiple philanthropic interests, community influence and/or capacity for leadership gifts.  The impact of decisions made will be University-wide.

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Fundraising

  • Provide a high level of service and support to the President of the University of Calgary, including the management of all briefings for the President's development activity
  • Work directly with the University of Calgary's Development and Alumni Executive Leadership Team to ensure effective coordination of Executive Leadership Team development activities
  • Collaborate across departments, faculties and schools to ensure proper engagement of principal gift prospects and donors
  • Manage all presidential meeting booking process for DAE ensuring timely identification, scheduling and information sharing with key stakeholders
  • Ensure all internal stakeholders are appropriately involved / consulted in the implementation of fundraising and plans
  • Ensure appropriate resources are in place to achieve fundraising targets
  • Ensure fundraising activity targets are met and where possible exceeded
  • Oversee the development of fundraising materials (gift agreements, proposals, case for support, impact reports)
  • Ensure the timely identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities of donors and prospects
  • Recommend and manage individualized strategies for prospects and donors
  • Collaborate in plans for expansion of the principal gift portfolio of prospects
  • Working closely with the stewardship and development and alumni services team to liaise with various departments to coordinate recognition opportunities, ensure effective donor stewardship and follow-through on contractual relationships with donors and administration of gifts

Administration

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant University policies, procedures and processes
  • Develop, implement and evaluate procedures and policies related to the efficient and effective operation of the principal gifts portfolio
  • Ensure all appropriate prospect and donor records are maintained within the database and within the guidelines of FOIP

Communication

  • Develop, build and maintain key relationships with internal stakeholders from various University departments
  • Prepare correspondence to donors and prospective donors on behalf of the President and members of the senior leadership team
  • Ensure the consistent communications with prospects and donors in the principal gifts portfolio
  • Ensure all stakeholders are provided with up to date information on key relationships

Leadership

  • Recruit, hire, motivate and manage staff members who have individual accountabilities
  • Supervise the strategic objectives of direct reports, including annual goal setting and regular performance reviews
  • Achieve positive outcomes by collaborating with, encouraging, supporting, coaching, developing and mentoring others that may or may not have formal reporting responsibilities to the portfolio

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Completion of a university degree
  • 5 to 7 years of progressive experience in fundraising or related work with senior officials in a post-secondary environment
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and listening skills
  • Proven leadership ability with strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and make appropriate recommendations
  • Ability to combine people and resources in a manner that will achieve objectives within established limits
  • Ability to coach and mentor a fundraising support team and manage relationships
  • Good negotiation skills
  • Honest, has integrity, and strive for high standards
  • Understanding and commitment to an academic environment
  • Innovative with the ability to motivate others, and passionate
  • Sound judgment and decision-making capabilities and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are required
