Position Description

Libraries and Cultural Resources at the University of Calgary invites applications for the position of Director, Health Sciences Library at the rank of Associate Librarian or Librarian.  This is a four year, renewable tenure-track appointment with a renewable administrative services assignment as Director, Health Sciences Library.  The anticipated start date is August 1, 2017.

Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) is a leader in the development of innovative information resources and services, locally, nationally and internationally.  In a converged environment, it successfully incorporates the resources and services of libraries, institutional and research archives, rare books and special collections, art galleries, and a university press to provide outstanding support for scholarship, learning and the creation of knowledge.

The Health Sciences Library serves the students, faculty and staff of the Cumming School of Medicine, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Libraries and Cultural Resources, and the University of Calgary community. It also acts as a resource for the community at large through the Health Knowledge Network, a collaboration with the University of Alberta.

Position Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Research and Learning Services the successful candidate leads and manages the Health Sciences Library in support of the teaching and research mission of Libraries and Cultural Resources and the University of Calgary. 

Responsibilities will include:

  • Administering and leading an operation with a staff complement of 11.5 FTEs, which includes the management of the Health Sciences Library (1 Management and Professional Staff, 6 AUPE staff, 2.5 academic staff or 9.5 FTEs), and coordination of the University of Calgary’s partnership role in the Health Knowledge Network (2 FTEs)
  • Formulating goals and objectives for the Health Sciences Library and recommending policies and programs to implement these objectives, ensuring that they are aligned with the Cumming School of Medicine, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the Faculty of Nursing, and University of Calgary
  • Contributing to financial, personnel, capital and space resource allocation decisions for the Health Sciences Library
  • Monitoring the quality and effectiveness of policies and programs within the Health Sciences Library
  • Ensuring the Health Sciences collections and services are consistent with the teaching, research and learning needs of the University
  • Coordinating shared access to electronic products relating to Health Sciences with provincial and national partners
  • Overseeing the organization and provision of public services in the Health Sciences Library, including reference, instruction, and circulation

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited program in librarianship, or recognized equivalent
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and provide leadership in a collegial manner
  • Evidence of a user-centered service focus, and use of instructional applications and technologies necessary to support the needs of students and faculty
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and with a variety of groups in collaborative and cooperative situations
  • Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust priorities, take initiative, set goals, manage time wisely, and make quick effective decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • Supervisory and budgetary experience
  • Familiarity with qualitative or quantitative data, knowledge synthesis and translation, manipulation of datasets and experience teaching data sources to researchers, faculty and students
  • Knowledge of statistical software and financial resources
  • Evidence of participation in scholarship and professional development activities. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in science or health disciplines
  • Administrative or leadership experience in a health sciences library with demonstrated impact
  • Record of scholarly publication and professional development activities

Salary and Benefits

Position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience at the rank of Associate Librarian or Librarian (Salary Range is $71,084 to $121,116 per year).  The University of Calgary’s comprehensive benefits and pension program is designed to promote a productive level of health and well-being to staff members through coverage for health, dental, life insurance, income protection for disability, and retirement income planning.  For salary and information, please refer to the University of Calgary’s salary schedule.
