Position Overview

The Clinical Simulation Learning Centre within the Faculty of Nursing is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time Monitor.

This position reports to the Manager, Administrative Services.  There is also a strong linkage requiring collaboration and accountability to the Director, Clinical Simulation Learning Centre (CSLC).

The Clinical Simulation Learning Centre Monitor is responsible for the delivery of specific services and works with minimal supervision and direction.  Communication with staff, professors and students is frequent, requiring professionalism, independent thought and sound judgment.

The CSLC is a busy environment operating 6 days per week to meet the demands of the Faculty of Nursing's year round programs. The CSLC Monitor is responsible for the delivery of specific services and works with minimal supervision and direction.  Working conditions can be moderately stressful given the requirement to work alone and carry out duties independently, with minimal supervision.  Duties often change in accordance with the needs of the lab.  A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success. The CSLC Monitor works directly with CSLC staff and faculty; hence, the ability to work in a team-based environment is essential. Communication with staff, professors and students is frequent, requiring professionalism, independent thought and sound judgment  This role requires awareness and understanding of FOIP (as the incumbent may be privy to conversations between students and Instructors), have independent decision-making skills and be flexible when unique situations present themselves whereby faculty members and/or students request additional supplies, equipment or resources.


Moderate to high physical demands are part of this position (i.e. movement of mannequins, changing beds, transporting equipment to classrooms, etc.). The incumbent must possess physical stamina, ability to lift up to 55 lbs. and sustain long periods of standing and walking.

This position is part of the AUPE bargaining unit.  Working days can be variable but on average are 4 hours per day, three days per week, Monday through Friday, plus an additional 4 hours on either Saturday or Sunday. Additional hours during the evenings and/or weekends may be required from time to time.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Onsite Clinical Practice Preparation Duties

  • Coordinate the preparation of required supplies, equipment, and teaching resources in support of onsite clinical practice and simulation activities
  • Sets up and dismantle equipment, supplies and displays used for simulation activities
  • Responsible for the movement of mannequins, changing beds, transporting equipment to classrooms and other tasks as assigned
  • Responsible for ensuring that the CSLC is an organized and clean learning environment
  • Perform minor repairs to CSLC equipment as able or arranges for repairs to be completed by appropriate university department or vendor
  • Communicate with CSLC technical support specialist to ensure technical issues which arise with CSLC equipment and mannequins are addressed
  • Assist with artistic moulage of classroom and simulation suites in preparation for learning activities or clinical simulations
  • Ensure communication and coordination of activities is maintained between CSLC Monitors
  • Provide coverage during vacation or periods of leave for other CSLC Monitors as needed
  • Communicate with CSLC team members when assistance with lifting or classroom preparation is required
  • Assist with the preparation and display of teaching materials utilized during onsite clinical practice


Inventory Control

  • Work collaboratively with the CSLC Team to ensure supplies, equipment and learning resources are available as needed for onsite clinical practice
  • Monitor inventory and orders medical supplies from Alberta Health Services and other vendors as required
  • Utilize PeopleSoft Supply Chain Management systems and maintains a strong understanding of the supply chain management systems used within the University
  • May be required to have a University of Calgary purchasing card and will be responsible for reconciling monthly purchasing card and for related reporting and documentation
  • Arrange services related to inventory through internal and external contractors

Other:

  • Establishe and maintain working relationships (both national and international) with counterparts from other educational institutions, simulation centre professionals and health industry/education providers
  • Assist with special projects as assigned by Manager, Administrative Services or the Director, CSLC
  • Other duties as needed

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Some post-secondary education combined with 1-3 years of work experience in a healthcare/nursing environment. Equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered
  • Related experience and/or a familiarity with healthcare/nursing/medical terminology, supplies and equipment would be an asset
  • Must have physical stamina and the ability to lift up to 55 lbs as well as sustain long periods of standing, walking, squatting and kneeling
  • A high degree of flexibility and the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities in an effective manner
  • Strong organizational skills that facilitate multi-tasking
  • Must be able to carry out duties independently and with minimal supervision. Must be comfortable working alone and following University of Calgary Working Alone guidelines
  • Proven ability to work within a team environment is required
  • Must understand operating protocols for maintenance and care of task trainers and mannequins
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate in a pleasant and professional manner is required
  • Strong technical skills with experience in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel), calendar systems, email applications and web-based systems is required
  • Must have awareness and understanding of FOIP
