Educational Coordinator, Continuing Medical Education, Cumming School of Medicine

Position Overview

The Department of Continuing Medical Education in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Educational Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Office of Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development (CME), University of Calgary's mission is to provide leadership in education for physicians, other health care professionals and the community, thereby helping to provide the best health care to our community. CME develops and delivers over 50 courses & program per academic year to serve the educational requirements for approximately 5,800 physicians and other health care professionals annually.

The position of Education Coordinator reports to the Director & Associate Dean, CME, and is responsible for program curriculum development and delivery with guidance from the Educational Consultants within CME. The Education Coordinator customizes learning opportunities and programs, liaises with Faculty, and promotes activities developed by the Office of CME.

The normal shift for this position is 7 hours per day, five days per week (1.0 FTE), usually Monday to Friday. However, this position will experience peak periods that may require staggered starts to the work day and some occasional changes to the work week.

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Act as liaison to translate innovative ideas, programs, goals, objectives of a given program into logistics and arrangements
  • Offer expertise in instructional design, conceptual design, and curricular design in the development of programs with stakeholders and stakeholder organizations
  • Lead course committees and advise course chairs, anticipating their needs, and potential pitfalls as a means to ensure appropriate adherence to policy, ethical standards, and responsible stewardship of funds
  • Suggest and design course curriculum independently
  • Work collaboratively with Educational Consultants and CME team to ensure translation between program development and program delivery
  • Ensure accreditation standards for both Colleges are met in program design and delivery
  • Interpret policy and regulatory requirements related to course accreditation as developed by College of Family Physicians of Canada, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Canadian Medical Association and other related health professional organizations
  • Support e-learning activities in the CME Office including program development work, webinars, discussion boards that might be developed in conjunction with a CME activity
  • Develop, maintain and support e-learning activities (ie: webinars and webcasts) in the CME office, including program development, execution, and manage discussion boards in conjunction with CME activities
  • Implement and deliver on full-cycle course and event planning, execution and evaluations
  • Independently determine target markets and audiences to promote and market courses, seminars and events to
  • Design, compile, distribute, collect and summarize course evaluation forms and feedback to speakers, course chairperson and planning committee members
  • Monitor course and event budgets
  • Work with registration staff to ensure registration, exhibitor and expense payments are processed

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters degree required, preferably in the medical/health professions/education
  • A minimum of 3 years of recent related experience
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Knowledge/skill base in education, curriculum development, evaluation and instructional methods required
  • Demonstrated exceptional organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills displaying professionalism, tact and diplomacy
  • Experience working with committees, volunteers, partners, sponsors, donors and high profile speakers and agents
  • Calmness and good judgement required to handle complex, stressful situations appropriately
  • Ability to work independently and use good judgement
  • Attention to details even when under pressure  
  • Advance knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Access & PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of University on-line systems such as PeopleSoft as well as other University systems and procedures would be an asset
  • Additional training in e-learning technologies, instructional design tools and learning management system (LMS), an asset
