Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Data Analyst. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Data Analyst supports the research activities of the Calgary Liver Unit (CLU) Research Group.  The ideal candidate for this position will have a combination of programmer, database design and analytical skills.  This position reports to the assistant professor of Medicine at the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. 

The successful candidate works with multiple data types and sources (e.g. AHS Admission / Discharge / Outpatient Clinic data, department/area specific data collection systems, research data). The Data Analyst must be able to quickly learn to use a variety of data collection systems, and determine the relevant information to best meet requirements.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Works with the assistant professor of Medicine and other CLU investigators and affiliated members of the CLU Research Group to confirm and clarify requests for information
  • Provides information through complex database queries across multiple research and clinical database management systems
  • Coordinates database project planning and development including the evaluation of new software
  • Maintains clear and accurate database related documentation outlining steps performed in the analysis
  • Completes accurate and timely statistical analyses of research data in accordance with project objectives and deliverables.  Perform and interpret basic and advanced analyses
  • Analyzes available source systems and designs appropriate data extracts/scripts to pull required data and information from multiple systems to support research
  • Applies existing rules to obtain reliable results
  • Ensures integrity and rigor of primary and secondary datasets for research evaluation purposes, including data retrieval, analysis, interpretation, recommendation and report preparation
  • Works with advanced modelling techniques
  • Prepares and presents findings according to required specifications
  • Confirms queries and refines/clarifies as needed under the direction of the investigators

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Masters-level education with a strong quantitative component in a related field, e.g., health information management, community health sciences, health economics, biomedical statistics, epidemiology, biostatistics, quality assurance, or several years of equivalent experience
  • Previous experience in a healthcare environment is a definite asset
  • Minimum three years of experience working with spreadsheets, databases and tools for querying, integrating, analyzing, reporting and disseminating data
  • Experience in the application of information technology, database design and information management is an asset
  • Must have Microsoft SharePoint, Access and Oracle SQL or other comparable database query and report writing experience
  • Must have experience in the use of statistical packages, including SAS.  Must be able to write and modify SAS code, identify errors, validate output and results
  • Must have experience in cleaning, linking, creating, modifying and analyzing multiple datasets in a statistical or database-management software package.  Experience with macros an asset
  • Must have knowledge of specific techniques including regression modelling, survival analysis and propensity scores
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, SharePoint and Access), bibliographic software and electronic library databases and the ability to become proficient with new software packages
  • Experience using electronic library databases and bibliographic software
  • Proficiency in English, with excellent verbal and written communication skills to produce reports
  • Knowledge and experience addressing data quality issues in a health care setting is an asset
  • Must abide by the highest standards of confidentiality and have a sound understanding of the principles within Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, as well as the Health Information Act
