Position Overview

The Office of Sustainability is currently seeking a Full-time Coordinator, Sustainability Engagement.

The Office of Sustainability delivers programs to build engagement and leadership in sustainability across campus, leads the integration of sustainability in all aspects of university operations, and collaborates with the academic community on sustainability in teaching and research practices.  The office is the steward of the Institutional Sustainability Strategy (ISS) and guides various campus communities and operational units in advancing this Strategy.  The ISS supports the University of Calgary's goal of being a Canadian leader of sustainability in higher education.  See www.ucalgary.ca/sustainability for additional information.

Reporting to the Manager, Sustainability Engagement, the Sustainability Engagement Coordinator is responsible for developing and delivering annual programs, events, tools and resources in alignment with vision of the ISS and the supporting Framework on Engagement for Sustainability.  This role is to contribute to embedding sustainability into day-to-day practices and decision making of staff and the development of core competencies for leadership in sustainability of students as articulated the ISS.

The Sustainability Engagement Coordinator works closely with students, faculty and staff across campus. The position requires exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to productively engage a diverse range of stakeholders on campus.

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Working as a collaborative member of the Office of Sustainability team, the primary purpose of the Engagement Coordinator is to develop and deliver a suite of programs, events, tools and resources to contribute to embedding sustainability into day-to-day practices and decision making of staff and the development of core competencies for leadership in sustainability of students as articulated the ISS. This position will focus primarily on staff programming and campus inclusive programming.
  • This may include but is not limited to:

  • Create program, campaign and event proposals to be developed and delivered by the Office of Sustainability and / or in collaboration with strategic campus partners in line with the ISS and the supporting frameworks.
  • Develop tools, resources and processes to support engagement programming.
  • Consult with stakeholders and partners to review, assess, identify and recommend improvements in sustainability engagement programming.
  • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness in achieving outcomes.
  • Develop and facilitate staff programs to infuse sustainability into business and academic units across campus.
  • Develop and facilitate staff and student workshops and other learning (not for academic credit) activities regarding sustainability.
  • Develop and facilitate communities of practice related to sustainability for staff and students.
  • Coordinate collaborative committees to organize activities to promote awareness about and participation in campus sustainability.
  • Understand current learning and engagement theories and best practices and apply them to new / existing sustainability programming.
  • Facilitate campus stakeholder coalitions to foster communication and partnerships between various providers of sustainability related co-curricular programming.
  • Plan and coordinate high-profile campus events that may have participants from both on and off campus communities.
  • Supervise student interns that support engagement programming and activities.
  • Create opportunities for students to develop and lead co-curricular (not for credit) sustainability projects on campus.
  • Plan and deliver various activities/events for the Sustainability Resource Centre.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree relevant to learning theory, stakeholder engagement or sustainability is required.
  • Three to four years of experience directly related to student and staff engagement, educational program development or social marketing is required, preferably in a campus setting.
  • An interest in and familiarity with sustainability concepts and practices, experienced in applying these concepts, ability to effectively communicate about sustainability to a diverse range of audiences is required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a team member, nurture positive working relationships with various campus communities is required.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills, and the ability to engage a diverse audience with confidence in speaking in public.
  • Familiarity with working and objectively thinking through impacts of initiatives in an institutional setting is a strong asset.
  • Must possess strong organizational, time management and project management skills, and the ability to support multiple projects of various types at different stages with an emphasis on accuracy and meeting milestones and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, employ strong analytical skills, and present clear and concise concepts.
  • An ability to adapt quickly to shifting priorities, excel in non-routine working environment, and to thrive in a fast paced environment is required.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision, exercising tact, sound judgment and exceptional decision making skills.
  • Exceptional working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint with an ability to develop high-quality documents and presentations is required.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and applying qualitative and quantitative assessment methodology to drive continuous improvement in engagement programming
