Position Overview

The Native Centre in Student & Enrolment Services invites applications for a Native Ambassador Post-Secondary Initiative (N.A.P.I.) Program Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Native Ambassador Post-Secondary Program (N.A.P.I.) is an Aboriginal youth outreach program designed to provide motivation presentation and to deliver a comprehensive leadership training program to Aboriginal youth throughout western Canada. The program was developed and is managed by The Native Centre at the University of Calgary and is sponsored by corporate partners.

The program hires and trains Aboriginal post-secondary students on a part time basis to deliver motivational presentations and a series of leadership training modules to Aboriginal youth in various youth programs, high schools, and summer camps throughout Alberta, British Columbia, the Yukon and the NWT. The program reaches approximately 4000 Aboriginal youth per year. The leadership curriculum offers three levels of leadership training to aboriginal youth Level I: Personal Leadership (five modules), Level II: Team Leadership (five modules), and Level III: Community Leadership (three modules).

Peak periods vary and are governed by program activity during the school year, summer camps, and annual Fall report writing. This position includes occasional travel to Aboriginal communities to deliver leadership training. The work schedule is flexible, and shall not exceed 17 hours per week. Due to the nature of position, the incumbent will experience some irregular hours, and may be expected to work occasional evenings or weekends. In these cases, the weekly work schedule hours shall be adjusted in order to accommodate special events, presentations, and travel.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Assist the Coordinator with the training for N.A.P.I. Ambassadors
  • Assist with the scheduling of program activities, presentations, and leadership training
  • Assist with travel arrangements for Ambassadors
  • Assist with the facilitation of leadership training modules in all three levels of the N.A.P.I. leadership curriculum program
  • Provide feedback and assistance to the Coordinator in refining and revising leadership curriculum
  • Assist with the compilation of monthly reports, program evaluations, and data collection for the Annual program report

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Must have completed an undergraduate degree in a related field and one to three years of related work experience
  • Excellent program organizational and leadership skills
  • Excellent written, public speaking, presentation, and facilitation skills
  • Report writing experience
  • Knowledge of the Aboriginal community and experience in working successfully with Aboriginal youth
  • Excellent computer skills in word processing, Facebook, Twitter, Blackboard, Power Point, Excel, and Desk-top Publishing programs
