Position Description

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Energy Systems and Technologies

In 2016, the University of Calgary was awarded $75 million, over seven years, from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) for its initiative entitled: Global Research Initiative in Sustainable Low Carbon Unconventional Resources. The goal of this research is to dramatically reduce the impact of energy extraction and energy use on the environment.

As part of the implementation of its CFREF scientific strategy and to address the Grand Challenge, Principles of life cycle analysis for energy systems will be applied, drawing on the tools and framework developed, to evaluate the potential of scientific breakthroughs and early stage technologies to achieve target outcomes. This team is engaged with the research teams (three themes) throughout the program to inform research prioritization and ensure research directions are aligned with strategic objectives.

We seek applications from qualified candidates within 1-4 years of their PhD degree. The required qualifications are as follows:

1 Postdoc Scholar Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of energy systems and technologies: The Postdoctoral Scholar is expected to challenge faculty to consider new research directions, mentor graduate students, and have a significant impact on the University of Calgary’s goals of promoting discovery, creativity and innovation. The position will develop research in the area of Energy Technology Assessment. The objective of this research is to advance the assessment of energy technologies by developing novel simulation tools, extension of life cycle assessment methods and dynamic systems modelling. New insights into economic and environmental performance of emerging energy technologies will better inform decisions about infrastructure and research investment. This Energy Technology Assessment research will contribute to a Canada Research Chair in Energy Technology Assessment and the Global Research Initiative in Sustainable Low Carbon Unconventional Resources, funded through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). This global initiative brings together 270 researchers and scholars across the University of Calgary to find new ways to transition to a safer, cleaner and more secure energy future. Ideal candidates have a strong background in energy systems modeling, energy systems analysis, and Life Cycle Assessment. Candidates must be critical thinkers. Experience with uncertainty analysis and advanced statistical techniques is an asset.

In addition, each candidate will be required to work within a team environment and so excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of interdisciplinary researchers is a must.

Postdoctoral positions offer a stipend of $55,000 CAD/year for 2 years, including benefits, travel and computer allowance, and operating budgets. Postdoctoral fellows will be expected to apply for major funding opportunities they are eligible for (e.g. NSERC, Killam, AITF, Banting) Applications should consist of a current CV, a list of 2-3 referees with contact information and a cover letter indicating which area you are interested in and what your availability is. The search will continue until the team is assembled.
