Program Engagement Specialist, Bachelor of Health Sciences, Cumming School of Medicine

Position Overview

The Department of Bachelor of Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Program Engagement Specialist.

Reports to the Administrative Manager with strong accountabilities to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Health & Science Education (UHSE).

Requires a broad knowledge and expertise in matters pertaining to the Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) program, and the context within which it fits in both the Cumming School of Medicine and the University of Calgary.  Requires exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with a proven ability to exercise independent judgement within established guidelines.  Works under significant stress due to high volume of diverse work projects related to complex issues and concerns, involving peak periods as well as shifting deadlines.  Requires expertise in the field of Communications, with broad knowledge on development and implementation of related strategic priorities.

 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Communications
  • Foster networking opportunities with BHSc alumni to encourage potential advisory and mentorship relationships between alumni and current students
  • Promote alumni achievements through a variety of social media and marketing vehicles to highlight the variety of career opportunities possible through the BHSc program
  • Involved in the design and generation of contemporary program marketing and recruitment materials including banners, brochures, podcasts, videos, online advertisements, program swag, etc.
  • Implement and manage the redesign of the BHSc program website to streamline and bolster the visibility and profile of the BHSc program online
  • Develop informative and innovative marketing opportunities through various technology platforms including social media and video resources to promote and showcase the BHSc program
  • Responsible for the development, planning, organization and implementation of a variety of program-related events and workshops (including student, alumni, faculty and campus, outreach, and donor)
  • Active member of BHSc Student Engagement Committee
  • Strategy Development
    • Work closely with Associate Dean (UHSE) and program Directors in long range program planning for multiple program projects and priorities
    • Contribute to and aid in develop long-range strategic plans for program engagement and communications
    • Develop and implement a recruitment and marketing strategy for the BHSc program, identifying both key geographic regions (local, provincial and national) as well as important academic schools/programs that are aligned specifically towards BHSc program streams (especially Health & Society and Bioinformatics)
    • Work with the Associate Dean (UHSE) and Fund Development to develop, implement and manage short and long-term fundraising strategies for the program
    • Work collaboratively with the Associate Dean (UHSE) and Alumni Affairs to develop and implement an alumni strategy that will foster engagement initiatives and opportunities for BHSc alumni
  • Leadership
    • Liaise and build a strong relationship with Admissions and Recruitment office to effectively utilize specific recruitment opportunities with key BHSc staff, alumni, students and faculty directly involved in recruitment events
    • Advocate and facilitate the implementation and oversight of key university and faculty policies and guidelines related to communications and social media
    • Makes recommendations to leadership on the development of communications policies and strategies and is responsible for overseeing their implementation
    • Carries out oral and written directives from the Association Dean (UHSE), and the Administrative Manager
       

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • University degree in Communications, Public Relations, or a related field
  • Minimum of five years of experience in communications and engagement with a strong focus on strategic planning
  • A combination of education, training and experience may be considered
  • Demonstrated connection with Calgary and the community at large
  • Previous experience within a post-secondary educational setting is required
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills required including demonstrated abilities in public speaking and presentations and project management
  • Highly developed organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly for identifying trends in environments and systems, generating original ideas and innovative solutions, and working effectively in a team environment
  • Experience with program marketing, event planning and organization, as well as professional use of social media and video platforms
  • Ability to work independently using initiative, exercising good judgement and decision making skills is essential
