Position Description

The primary focus of this position will be to provide personal, academic and career counselling to individual students or groups of students and to develop and deliver student wellness, leadership and student success programs
 
The nature of the work is driven by deadlines, interruptions and shifting priorities; it is imperative that the Student Services & Counselling Officer can work well in a team-based environment and with minimal direct supervision. S/he must stay current and up-to-date with regulations of the University of Calgary main campus in Canada, and related to the academic requirements and regulations for the University of Calgary nursing programs.

Qualifications/Expertise Required:
  • Qatari preferred. Alternately, Local Hire with family sponsorship.
  • Graduation from a recognized university with a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology, Education with focus on counselling, or Social Work
  • Previous experience in a post-secondary student counselling role is strongly recommended
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness of the needs of diverse (cultural, ethnic and age) population in the transnational post-secondary setting
  • Ability to speak Arabic would be an asset
  • Willingness to obtain driver’s license in Qatar and to travel within the city and close environs to community based committee meetings, events UCQ students participate in.
Accountabilities:
  • Provides professional and appropriate personal and academic counseling to students.
  • Fosters cooperative and trusting relationships with students, faculty and staff to help develop a student centered, caring environment.
  • Provide professional psychotherapeutic and educational counseling services for individual students, groups and in the classroom.
  • Function as independent, responsible professionals in accordance with professional codes of ethics and the traditional duties and responsibilities of scholars, consulting and collaborating with academic and administrative leaders.
  • Administer and interpret psychological testing as appropriate to the clients concern, for example in career counseling.
  • Assess individual student’s mental states as an aid to decision-making by administrators, for example in cases of non-academic misconduct.
  • Act as a consultant to: - administrators and faculty members in their dealings with students and with respect to policy issues which affect students - parents of students with respect to issues involving student functioning - public and private agencies which bear some responsibility for students.
