Position Overview

The Department of Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for an Education Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Ward of the 21st Century (W21C) is a research and innovation initiative based at the University of Calgary. The W21C was created to respond to the urgent need for innovation in health care. The W21C's collaborative environment drives truly transformative research and enables enhanced contact between researchers and health professionals.

The W21C Education Research Assistant reports to the W21C Research Manager and will receive direction from the Lead Investigator(s) of the project(s) they are assigned to. The Education Research Assistant will be responsible for supporting project specific and general W21C activities. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Coordinating and carrying out research activities of key research studies in consultation with the principal investigator(s) and project research associates
  • Work with Postgraduate Medical Education to facilitate program evaluations for the upcoming Competency by Design transition for residency programs as mandated by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
  • Under limited supervision, responsible for performing a range of research and coordination tasks in support of W21C program objectives
  • Ensuring stakeholders are kept informed of the study’s progression
  • Assisting with applications (e.g., ethics, grants) and development of research protocols
  • Data collection, including needs assessments and survey administration
  • Assisting with interpretation and analysis of data collected
  • Assist with report writing, production of research papers suitable for publication, and support knowledge translation activities
  • Provide general support to the Ward of the 21st Century program to facilitate the progression of the W21C vision.  Activities include research center space management, support for event planning, and contributions to the overall collaborative environment

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, with a preference for training within a medical education related field
  • Experience working in the clinical setting or in health professions education, particularly conducting research with physicians, patients, or medical learners at all levels (e.g., medical students, residents)
  • 1-2 years of related experience preferred
  • Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative clinical research
  • Database skills required with experience in SPSS, Excel, Access, and other databases
  • Knowledge of the W21C Initiative is an asset
  • Familiarity with Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) is an asset
  • Leadership, communication skills, organizational skills, problem solving skills and interpersonal skills required
  • Resourceful, innovative, creative, strategic, problem solves
  • Good judgment and concern for detail and accuracy
  • Ability to receive direction, collaborate with others in setting goals, and work effectively in teams to achieve agreed upon goals
  • Ability to work independently and promote good teamwork
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and courtesy dealing with patients, staff and physicians
  • Ability to communicate well with colleagues from various disciplines and external collaborators within a complex initiative
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of patient records
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Access, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Experience with statistical software packages
