Senior Communications Specialist, University of Calgary in Qatar

Position Overview

The University of Calgary opened its first overseas branch campus with generous financial support from the State of Qatar and began delivering undergraduate nursing programs in 2007. Student enrolment has steadily increased during the years, and now the University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) offers several nursing education streams, including very recently a Master’s degree program. 
 
The University of Calgary in Qatar is currently seeking a Senior Communications Specialist.
 
The successful applicant must be able to relocate to Doha, Qatar ideally in January 2018. This is a 2 year contract renewable upon mutual agreement.

The Senior Communications Specialist works closely with the Marketing and Communications team in developing great marketing and communications content, particularly for an online audience. The specialist is also responsible for contributing to general marketing and communications planning, implementing marketing events, maintaining the website, and overseeing appropriate tactics for new media tools such as social media networking, video, blogs and other emerging communications technologies. The incumbent will be providing direction and developmental support to the Communications Specialist. In the absence of the Director, Marketing and Communications, this role will be responsible onsite in ensuring the day-to-day operations at UCQ continue and all projects remain on target.

Position Description

As the candidate is responsible for UCQ’s web presence, including content development, lay-out and design, and publishing using UCQ’s content management system, some technical expertise is required.  The specialist will work with UCQ’s IT department to ensure the maintenance of technical functions/applications and in developing and making recommendations for new online communication. As such, the candidate will have a strong background in Drupal, as well as digital marketing tools. The candidate will be familiar with many aspects of digital media including digital cameras, video conferencing products, IOS and Android mobile tools especially in the digital marketing space. The candidate will have a strong background in desktop technologies especially MAC OS and Microsoft Windows as well as in in-depth knowledge of cloud technologies especially DropBox and Microsoft Cloud.

The incumbent also works in the development of excellent and engaging content and eye-catching and interesting creative and implements this over a number of channels, most of which are online. The specialist will also assist with drafting marketing and communications plans, including key messages, and ensuring those messages are delivered via various channels, including print and events.

The role involves a high level of interaction with others within the UCQ campus, specifically the UCQ IT department, in order to gain commitment, share knowledge, expertise and resources, and provide an improved and more efficient University of Calgary in Qatar public presence.  A partnership with UC web specialists will also be required.
 
Qualifications/Expertise Required:
  • A Post-secondary degree or diploma in Communications, media, digital media or related field
  • A minimum of four years in a similar role
  • Experience with and expertise in all aspects of marketing and communications planning.
  • An ability to write and edit copy in English for web as well as use communications and design skills to ensure website presence is meeting the brand and quality standards of the university.
  • Strong communication and project management skills are required.
  • Expertise and experience with Drupal is required
  • Excellent knowledge of Windows and Macintosh OS, and the ability to address browser compatibility issues.
  • Experience in both PC and Macintosh environments using the following software: Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Image ready, InDesign and Photoshop), Microsoft Publisher, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Macromedia Flash, and Microsoft Office is an asset.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal. Proficiency in Arabic considered a definite asset.
  • High level of innovation, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work productively in a framework of operations that fully respects the laws, culture and religion of Qatar
  • Ability to work with staff at all levels and in a culturally diverse and complex environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others on campus and at the University of Calgary
  • The ability to work in a complex and international environment with an open and effective
  • communication style, to act decisively, and to exercise a high degree of initiative and judgment are required.
  • The ability to work in an environment that is undergoing change, and which can at times be stressful, is an important requirement of the position.
