Position Description

University of Calgary Continuing Education (UCCE) houses one of Canada's largest and most successful continuing education departments. It is a multi-disciplinary unit offering diploma, certificate and non-degree programs in the classroom and online through technologies for course delivery.

In support of the University of Calgary's core principles and financial objectives, Continuing Education is an academic unit with a mandate to respond to the needs of the community through the design, development and delivery of high-quality lifelong learning opportunities.

Each year, UCCE serves over 20,000 adult learners and offers more than one thousand courses taught by hundreds of instructors—all experts in their fields. It is expected to fund, through revenue generation, the majority of its operational costs while contributing financially to the university.

The success of University of Calgary Continuing Education in meeting its business target in a competitive environment is dependent upon effectively serving students and by providing high-quality instruction and programs.

Position Description

University of Calgary Continuing Education is currently recruiting for an Instructor (contract (term) position) to develop and teach the following Operational Risk Management (online) course in the Security Management area during the 2018 Spring Session:

New course- Operational Risk Management – Online Delivery

April 17 – June 25, 2018

Course Description:

Operational risks are those that relate to an organization’s people, processes, systems and external dependencies. Operational risks underlie many other risk types, in particular legal, regulatory and reputation risks and have potential to significantly affect the achievement of organizational objectives.  The assessment of operational risks will help organizations to identify and evaluate risks, determine a risk tolerance and make decisions regarding the appropriate risk treatment or mitigation strategy.   

This course will introduce the general principles of risk management and will examine approaches to risk assessment that can be applied to an organization’s operational risks.  Broad approaches to risk treatment and mitigation will be introduced and practical examples will allow students to apply risk assessment techniques.

Scope of Responsibilities (high level)

  • Create effective lessons plans, develop content, learning activities, presentations, assignments, evaluations, examinations.
  • Utilize Desire2Learn (D2L) and Adobe Connect to facilitate synchronous and asynchronous course delivery including all course materials, experiences and student communication.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent and work experience in the field are desirable.
  • CRSP is an asset.
  • Experience in both Security and, Health and Safety industry an asset.
  • Adult learning certificate or equivalent is an asset.
  • Previous teaching experience is essential; post-secondary teaching experience is preferred.
  • Previous experience utilizing Learning Management Systems such as Desire2Learn, Adobe Connect, Blackboard or Moodle, is preferred.

These instructional positions are non-credit teaching appointments and, as such, are contract positions without benefits (other than those required by Employment Standards).
