Communications Specialist, Continuing Education

Position Overview

The Department of Marketing in Continuing Education is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Communications Specialist for approximately 2 years.

Reporting to the Associate Director, Marketing Communications, the Communications Specialist will have the opportunity to exhibit a highly effective professional practice in a large, complex work environment. The Communications Specialist works closely with the Associate Director, Marketing Communications by contributing to the development, coordination, implementation, and measurement of the overall marketing communications plan and is responsible for developing and implementing communications strategies and tactics.

More specifically, as part of the in-house creative and production team, the Communications Specialist is responsible for creating and maintaining written content that conveys the voice and vision of Continuing Education throughout various marketing and communication channels. This includes crafting persuasive, concise, compelling, and inspirational content alongside graphic designers, video producers, subject matter experts and any internal and external partners as required. The role will work closely with the leadership team to ensure all creative outputs are on strategy.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Source, gather, write, edit and proofread copy for a variety of communication projects as needed for a variety of audiences such as prospective students, staff, instructors and various stakeholders.
  • Write and edit copy for traditional and digital media, including but not limited to interviewing individuals for news releases; writing copy for email marketing, social media posts, web content, print publications and other advertising and promotional materials including video scripts.
  • Write event briefings, speaking remarks and presentation materials when required.
  • Advise and create content for the web and social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn including managing vendors, taking video footage and/or photographs to support the content.
  • Write and edit course/program descriptions, learning outcomes and materials in collaboration with a subject matter expert.
  • Exercise quality control to ensure final work conforms to brand guidelines and style standards.
  • Take initiative in turning ideas into formalized projects including but not limited to the coordination and assembly of publication materials working with our in-house design staff.
  • Set and meet deadlines for multiple projects.
  • Keep leader(s) fully informed of projects progress, pre-prioritize as needed, and provide quick turnaround on projects in the queue.
  • Work effectively and collaboratively in team situations within Continuing Education and across University departments to achieve optimal results.
  • Take on other tasks as required and requested, which may include participating in the Continuing Education Academic Planning and Policy Council, the Campus Communicators meetings and planning public relations events
  • Ability to work some evenings and/or weekends during peak periods.

Qualifications / Requirements:

 

  • Post-secondary education in communications, public relations, journalism, writing and/or equivalent from a recognized institution
  • 5 - 7 years of experience in communications/public relations/journalism
  • Experience in a communications role in a large, complex organization is an asset
  • Experience in all aspects of planning, tracking and implementing best-practice communication strategies
  • Ability to analyze, synthesize and organize large amounts of information
  • Ability to listen effectively and deliver messages that have the desired effect
  • Proven ability to write compelling news, articles, web content and other marketing communications materials
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, including excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills
  • Working knowledge of social media tools, how they can be used and how to leverage different social media channels and conversations, in an effective, sustainable way with few dedicated resources
  • The ability to take initiative to identify areas for improvement and potential solutions is critical to this role
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels while handling multiple priorities and competing deadlines
  • Ability to prioritize and juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines
  • Sound judgment, proven analytical and problem-solving ability, a strong work ethic and results orientation
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • Understanding of software/tools like InDesign, Photoshop and content management systems
  • Ability to take video footage and/or photographs to support stories would be an asset
  • Knowledge of instructional design theory, as it relates to writing effective course learning outcomes would also be an asset
  • Note: Testing of writing and editing skills along with a presentation of your best work may be part of the recruitment process
