Position Overview

The Department of Operations & Maintenance in Facilities is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief Regular Millwright for approximately 3 months.

The Millwright reports to the Maintenance & Planning - Maintenance Supervisor. The Millwright is responsible to ensure the proper installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of all rotating equipment and systems. This includes a continuous high volume of work with certain peak periods, imposing high physical and mental demands.
 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Performing skilled, qualified trade level installations, maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs of stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment
  • Reading diagrams and schematic drawings to determine work procedures
  • Operating equipment and dollies to move heavy machinery and parts
  • Competency with rigging and lifting equipment a definite asset
  • Fitting bearings, aligning gears and shafts, attaching motors, and connecting couplings and belts (often to within a fraction of a millimeter tolerance)
  • Aligning and testing equipment and make any necessary adjustments
  • Performing preventive and operational maintenance using procedures such as vibration analysis, and repairing or replacing defective parts when necessary
  • Trouble-shooting hydraulic, pneumatic and programmable logic controls
  • May be required to complete some welding and fabrication as well as maintain an inventory of replacement parts
  • May be required to monitor the work of contractors to ensure work is carried out to specifications, university standards and code
  • Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems
  • Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems
  • Becoming familiar with all existing University structures and systems, as well as acquiring knowledge of new trends, techniques, codes and equipment as they become relevant to the operation of the University
     

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Provincial or interprovincial Millwright Trade Certification with 3-5 years of experience
  • Must be familiar with recognized practices, techniques, tools, test equipment, instrumentation, and safety procedures associated with the millwright trade
  • Must have experience in commercial, industrial and institutional electrical applications
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, shop drawings, specifications, and maintenance manuals is required
  • Must be able to work on ladders at various heights, work in confined spaces, in all weather conditions
  • Must have mechanical ability and be able to use hand and power tools
  • Must be able and willing to work in a variety of environments, including office settings, classrooms, research laboratories including areas that support animals, mechanical rooms, service tunnels etc.
  • Must be able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Must have the ability to work with others in a team environment including mentoring and sharing knowledge with apprentices and co-workers
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision to complete tasks assigned in a timely manner
  • Must have a proven record of upgrading and updating applicable trade skills and staying current with industry trends
  • Must have proven record of providing superior customer service including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction
  • Must be able to listen to and understand information and ideas presented and have ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand
  • Must be able to use Microsoft office suite including word, e-mail, mobile communication devices, such as iPhone, Smartphone etc.
  • Experience with the maintenance of rotary compressors and vacuum pumps a definite asset
  • Experience and/or exposure to predictive maintenance technologies (i.e vibration analysis, NDT, thermography) a definte asset
  • Must hold a valid minimum Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License with less than 7 demerit points. Learners, probationary, graduated license, or motorcycle/moped only license will not be acceptable. A drivers abstract will be requested
