Position Overview

HR Services within Human Resources is currently seeking a Full-time Regular HR Advisor.

Reporting to a Manager, HR Services, the Advisor advises, coordinates and administers the operational aspects of human resources processes within their portfolio for all staff groups and ensures these processes are effectively planned, coordinated and communicated. This position makes recommendations regarding the development of policies, processes and systems that would add value to HR's various Centres of Expertise as well those of their clients.

Working with the HR Partner, the Advisor provides consistent advice to clients on a range of human resources functions which may include Employee and Labour Relations, Workplace Wellness (Disability Management), Talent Management (Attraction and Retention, Organizational Effectiveness, Learning and Development), and Total Rewards (Compensation and Recognition, Workforce Planning and Analytics).

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Employee and Labour Relations:

  • Provides consistent employee and labour relations advice within the guidelines of the University, the Collective Agreements, the Alberta Labour and Human Rights Laws and any other applicable legislation
  • Conducts investigations including creation of investigation plans, performing interviews and making recommendations
  • Advises and supports clients with performance management, discipline or corrective action including terminations and position abolishments
  • In collaboration with the Staff Wellness Centre, provides clients with disability management support, including return to work and facilitation of accommodation

Talent Management:

  • Provides clients with support and advice in regards to the recruitment and selection process
  • Facilitates the performance management process for clients for all employee groups. Ensure Academic Career and Review Processes, are carried out in accordance with Academic governance documents
  • Provides leadership development training and other identified training needs within portfolio

Total Rewards:

  • Oversees the compensation processes and practices within the client group(s) following guidelines and processes established by Human Resources
  • Assists clients with job profile process to ensure profiles accurately capture the requirements and accountabilities of positions to support employee attraction and retention efforts

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • University degree in a related field plus 3-5 years related experience in a human resources generalist role. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Knowledge of best practice in Human Resources areas such as Employee and Labour Relations, Talent Management and Organizational Development, Compensation and Total Rewards, Staff Wellness and Disability Management
  • Knowledge of applicable HR legislation, policies and practices (i.e. Public Services Employee Relations Act, University of Calgary and Alberta Union of Provincial Employees Collective Agreement, The University of Calgary Faculty Association Collective Agreement, Employment Standards Code, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.) an asset
  • Demonstrated effective skills including problem solving, communication, change leadership, relationship building, teamwork, consulting/advising, negotiating/influencing, analytics and decision making
  • CHRP designation or willingness to obtain designation an asset
  • Strong computer skills including proficiency with Word, Excel, Outlook, and PeopleSoft or other HRIS
  • Commitment to continuous learning and improvement
