Position Overview

The Department of Emergency Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for three (3) Research Assistant(s). This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for the management of one or more of the following aspects of emergency research projects: recruitment, enrolment, data collection, analysis, and monitoring of human subjects; protection of subjects, rights according to the ethical guidelines and provincial legislation; preparation and reporting of adverse events; and the education of patients, family and other health care professionals.

The Research Assistant will be reporting to the Principle Investigator.

Recurring Part-time employees are engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.  The hours will be variable from 8:00am to 8:00pm Monday to Friday. 

This position will be based out of the Rockyview General Hospital - Emergency Department.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Patient Recruitment/Screening/Scheduling:

  • Maintenance of screening log
  • Screen charts as per Health Information Act (HIA)
  • Liaise with health care providers
  • Prescreen subjects for eligibility requirements and document on screening log
  • Review eligibility with Principal Investigator and/or Research Coordinator and primary care physician

Subject Management:

  • Assist with the delivery of study information to ensure subject receives appropriate information prior to informed consent
  • Plan and coordinate tests, procedures or evaluations required by the protocol in a safe, effective and timely manner in accordance to the Health Professions Act and if within the scope of practice under the supervision (direct or indirect) of the Principle Investigator of the research project
  • Educate subject and emergency staff regarding protocol requirements

CRF (Case Report Form)/Source Documentation:

  • Case Report Forms

Review inclusion/exclusion criteria:

  • Review medical history
  • Determine concomitant medications
  • Make required calculations (e.g. convert lbs. to kg)
  • Enter data for specific visit on CRF or with Remote Data as applicable
  • Review data for accuracy

Responsibilities and Obligations:

  • Assist the investigator in the conduct of research in accordance with GCP and regulatory guidelines
  • Apply knowledge of protocol obligations to maintain the integrity of the clinical trial
  • Provide direction or training to others

Informed Consent/Assent:

  • Describe basic and additional elements
  • Explain study to subject (e.g. purpose, duration, risks/benefits)
  • Obtain all required signatures (e.g. legal guardian, witness, assent of youth, physician, short form)

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Completed or working towards a Undergraduate Degree (science related degrees preferred)
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet Skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to problem solve in complex situations
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
  • Strong clinical background in related specialty
  • Knowledge of research methodologies
  • Experience in research
  • Experience with hospital computer systems (SEC/SCM)
