Position Description
The Department of Emergency Medicine, in the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, invite applications for a Tenure Track appointment as an Emergency Medicine Data Scientist at the Assistant Professor level. The primary appointment for this position will be in the Department of Emergency Medicine, with a joint appointment in Community Health Sciences, and involvement in the Centre for Health Informatics. This position has 70% protected time for research, 20% for education, and 10% time dedicated towards administration.
Qualifications include a PhD with specialized training in data science and research methodology, along with an established research agenda and strong evidence of successful scholarship in health improvement science and innovative approaches to quality improvement science. Applicants for this position must present evidence of an established research program, a publication record as evidenced by continuous publication in high-ranking journals, including as senior or first author. Applicants must show evidence of successful teaching and/or graduate supervision, and evidence of established academic engagement in professional and other communities.
The purpose of this recruitment is to recruit an individual who is actively involved in data science methods and research who can focus on evaluating Emergency Department (ED) operations with the goal of achieving improvements. This role will utilize principles of analysis of large operational datasets and implementation science. Emergency Departments are in need of innovative approaches to fostering important ED quality improvement initiatives such as enhanced ED flow, triage and resource utilization, improved patient care experience, equitable care and access for vulnerable populations, as well as collaboration with other specialties. We are actively pursuing innovative research and practices in many of these areas but would benefit from strategies to foster engagement from our broader physician and allied health staff through operational research and data science strategies. The Data Scientist recruit will significantly add to the Emergency Department’s ability to become a national leader in ED operational metrics and data science.
This position will contribute and serve as a source of evidence to inform the Continuing Professional Development Framework Plan for Alberta. The successful applicant will be an individual committed to medical education and implementation science that can lead by example, and re-vitalize this process by engaging researchers, learners, trainees, and faculty and ultimately harness the power of the many skilled individuals that are already part of the Emergency Department.
