The Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning (TI) is dedicated to strengthening teaching and learning cultures, communities and practices. The TI supports the teaching development of instructors, promotes high-impact student experiences such as experiential and work-integrated learning and undergraduate research, ensures the meaningful integration of learning technologies, supports equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, and Indigenous Ways of Knowing in our teaching and learning environments, and fosters scholarship and research to better understand and improve teaching and student learning. The Taylor Institute works to facilitate conversations, build communities, link networks, and catalyze scholarly and culturally-relevant teaching and learning approaches across the University. 

The University of Calgary, and the Taylor Institute now seeks applications for a full-time tenure track (permanent) academic appointment as an Educational Development Consultant in the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning, with a start date of July 1, 2023 or at a mutually agreeable time. We are currently seeking a candidate with strong expertise and experience teaching and supporting other educators in clinical and/or laboratory-based settings, that foster and promote experiential learning. The starting salary range for this position is $85,000 to $100,000 per annum and will be negotiated based on the candidate’s expertise, contributions, and experiences.

Academic staff in the Taylor Institute engage in: educational practice to lead scholarly and culturally-relevant educational and curriculum development practices and programs; leadership and service to the Taylor Institute, university and broader community; and, research and scholarship related to educational and/or curriculum development practice and teaching and learning in postsecondary education.

Reporting to the Senior Director of the Taylor Institute (TI), the educational development consultant will: 

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate educational and curriculum development initiatives (e.g., consultations, partnerships, courses, workshop series, programs, resources) that help educators across UCalgary implement scholarly and culturally-relevant teaching practices.
  • Lead courses as part of the graduate student, postdoctoral scholar, and academic staff certificates in university teaching.
  • Create and nurture communities and networks of knowledge sharing to help advance the practice, leadership, and scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Develop research-informed resources to support educational development programs and knowledge mobilization, including the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Design and facilitate discussions with groups of academic staff to strengthen teaching and learning approaches.
  • Provide educational development leadership and expertise on departmental, faculty and institution-level teaching and learning committees, working groups, action groups, and task forces.
  • Collaborate with academic and non-academic units to advance teaching and learning cultures, communities, and practices in their local context.
  • Support a culture of respect, kindness, and reciprocity both within and beyond the TI.
  • Actively contribute leadership and service to the TI, University, and field of educational development (locally, provincially, nationally and/or internationally)
  • Engage in scholarship related to educational development and/or teaching and learning in postsecondary education, including advancing knowledge and practices related to Indigenous pedagogies and Ways of Knowing.

The ideal candidate is a growth-oriented educator with the ability to collaborate and build relationships with all levels of the university community. Applicants must have an earned doctorate (or are actively enrolled in a doctoral program and are nearly completion) and a minimum of 3 years of educational development/teaching experience in postsecondary education. The incumbent will have a strong record of teaching at the university level, with scholarly experience and expertise teaching and supporting other educators who teach in clinical and/or laboratory settings that foster and promote experiential learning.
The successful candidate must possess a strong educational development philosophy, which articulates the key principles and values that inform their practice, including their commitments to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, and truth and reconciliation. Also required is evidence of creating and leading educational development practices that: a) are grounded in a clearly articulated philosophy statement, b) that help other academic staff, graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars advance their teaching expertise, c) that help advance teaching, student learning and/or curriculum more broadly, and d) that demonstrate a commitment to creating respectful and inclusive environments that promote learner engagement. Experience identifying gaps/needs, leading educational/curriculum development activities for other educators (i.e., graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, academic staff), supporting the development of teaching dossiers and philosophies, and supporting engagement in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) are requirements for this position. Experience evaluating and communicating the impact of educational development initiatives and programs is also required. Candidates must also include evidence of participation in ongoing professional learning to strengthen their educational development practice.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to collaborate and build reciprocal and respectful relationships with educators across disciplinary contexts to help advance teaching and learning communities, cultures, and practices. They must also have a proven track record in building partnerships and the ability to work effectively with university administration, academic staff, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and staff supporting instruction. The successful candidate will support a culture of care, kindness, collaboration, and respect, and engage colleagues in meaningful dialogue and decision-making processes about teaching and learning in post-secondary education. Applicants must also have demonstrated the ability to adapt their educational development practice as priorities are refined or new strategic priorities emerge across the unit, institution, and postsecondary context. Also essential is evidence of engagement in or promise of original research and scholarship in fields relevant to educational development and teaching and learning in postsecondary education. Demonstrated expertise related to one or more of the University of Calgary’s Strategic Priorities in: Experiential Learning (including work-integrated learning, community-engaged teaching and learning, and undergraduate research), Sustainability, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility, Indigenous perspectives, Online and Blended Learning, Future-Focused Programming, and Mental Health and Well-being will be considered an asset.
