Position Overview

The Department of CSM Clinical Research in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for three (3) Database Developer(s). This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 9 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The University of Calgary, Clinical Research Unit in the Cumming School of Medicine provides research and analytical data support services to researchers within the Faculty and their collaborators. This position reports to the Manager, Technical Solutions and Innovation. There will be peak periods during the year that are stressful due to overlapping deadlines and shifting priorities.

This is a recurring part time position with variable hours.  Recurring part time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Develop and configure digital research data collection instruments and survey materials to support electronic data capture
  • Configure data fields, data structures, and databases and platforms to meet an individual project’s requirements (e.g., workflows, reporting requirements, survey dissemination, etc.)
  • Where clients have unique/advanced requirements, research and consult materials/user guides to identify ways and functions to implement the electronic data collection request
  • Provide high quality client support by answering questions through a service desk ticketing system
  • Develop scripting solutions, branching logic, validation checks for routine reporting and metrics
  • Facilitate data extraction transformation and load processes to support application change
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Maintains data privacy and confidentiality policies at all levels 

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • College or University Degree in health/life/medical sciences, or computer science or related diploma / certificate (eg. research methods, software/application development, data)
  • Experience with clinical research data platforms is required (REDCap, REDCap Cloud, Qulatrix or related)
  • Experience in working with data fields and data structures, administering data sets, using databases or performing data quality control and conversion activities (i.e. Excel, CSV, JSON, xSQL, etc.)
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills with the ability to identify solutions to researcher requirements, exercise sound judgment, and make solid client-centric recommendations
  • High commitment to quality control, including attention to detail
  • Proven track record of exceptional reliability, high degree of initiative, and ability to multitask
  • Self-starter and problem solver with superior technical, research, and analytical skills
  • Prioritize, organize and perform multiple assignments simultaneously with changing priorities and tight time frames
  • Strong documentation skills
  • Experience with support desk ticketing systems, Confluence/Jira an asset
  • Programming expertise in for example Python, Javascript, or comparable platforms
  • Provide skilled technical procedures to support the research project
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
