Position Overview

Facilities Development is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Asbestos Abatement Coordinator.

Reporting to the Manager, Capital Renewal, this role will apply a broad knowledge and expertise to complete assigned asbestos abatement projects, on time and on budget, as well as manage the office administration for all asbestos-related activities.

The Asbestos Abatement Coordinator works independently and exercises good judgment under pressure to make day-to-day decisions for the assigned asbestos activities and office administration. Expected assets include: problem solving and conflict resolution skills, attention to detail, preparation and management of documentation and a general knowledge of buildings and systems.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Communicate and implement the appropriate asbestos control measures including elimination (abatement), engineering controls (adequate barriers and restrictions), administrative controls (safe work instructions, procedural controls and/or personal protective equipment) as required.
  • Responsible to schedule asbestos abatement in conjunction with internal and external stakeholders including arranging access; lab safety clearances if required; information/shutdown notices; EH&S area work permit and hazard assessment, etc. in accordance with University policies and procedures and in compliance with legislation.
  • Responsible to ensure all work is procured in accordance with the University's process, including competitive bidding, appropriate tendering, initiation of purchase orders and invoice process.
  • Organizes, coordinates and controls internal and external stakeholders, consultants and contractors for all asbestos related activities.
  • Ensures that work assigned is completed on time and on budget, meeting the needs of asbestos projects in accordance with University policies and in compliance with legislation.
  • Provides regular reporting to the Program Manager responsible for asbestos management and makes recommendations regarding development of policies and procedures.
  • Ensures all documentation is properly initiated, authorized, maintained and archived.
  • Accountable for the generation and delivery of various reports relating specifically to asbestos management, necessary to support and meet internal and external reporting requirements.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Post- secondary education or certification in the area of project management, environmental science, architecture, engineering or science discipline.
  • Experience in project management including worksite construction process, construction drawings/ documents, software, use of databases.
  • Training and/or certification in asbestos management from a recognized institution is highly desirable.
  • Training in office skills and administration and a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a busy office environment is required.
  • Knowledge of University culture, operating, financial and reporting systems and procedures would be desirable.
  • Ability to produce office visually pleasing and accurate documents either from draft material provided by others or by research and self- composition.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, negotiation and organizational skills are required.
  • Must have a proven ability to communicate well both in writing and verbally.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to lead and direct others.
  • Ability and interest in analyzing information and data would be an asset. .
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
