Position Overview

Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Regular General Maintenance Worker.

Operations and Maintenance (O&M) department, as a part of Facilities Management & Development, is responsible to ensure that building structures and systems for all University owned and leased properties are operated and maintained in a reliable, efficient and cost effective manner to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment in which campus users can carry out their activities. Campus is divided into 6 operating zones. This position reports to the Supervisor, Maintenance. Work is performed under minimal supervision.
 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Complete daily operations and maintenance coverage for systems and general facility maintenance
  • Assist trades personnel as part of their duties which do not require certification including, but not limited to carpentry, roofing, flooring, tile setting, door hardware, painting, minor plumbing, and electrical re-lamping
  • Work independently on various assignments relating to the trades, custodial, and grounds duties, including, but not limited to: carpentry, roofing, flooring, tile setting, door hardware, painting, minor plumbing, and general maintenance work
  • Participate in disaster planning and mock disaster exercises and attendance at department safety meetings
  • Responsible to become familiar with all existing University structures and systems, as well as acquire knowledge of new trends, techniques, codes and equipment as they become relevant to the operation of the University
  • Ensures that equipment, workspaces, and tools supplied by the University are used for their intended purposes, and are maintained in a safe working order

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Non-certified general facility maintenance experience would be an asset
  • Physical strength and stamina and be able to lift up heavy (up to 25 kilograms)
  • Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials, year round indoor and outdoor responsibilities and controlled hazardous environments
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time as well as be able to work in cramped positions
  • Mechanical aptitude and proven ability to use hand and power tools, to work on ladders at various heights, and demonstrate a safety-conscious attitude.
  • Ability and willing to work in a variety of environments, including office settings, classrooms, research laboratories including areas that support animals, mechanical rooms, service tunnels etc
  • Proven record of being able to work independently with minimal supervision to complete tasks assigned in a timely manner and have ability to handle multiple demands and competing priorities
  • Comfortable working with others in a team environment including mentoring and sharing knowledge with apprentices and co-workers
  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency situations
  • Excellent customer service including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented and have ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office suite including word, e-mail, mobile communication devices
  • Opportunities may include future training programs including apprenticeships
  • Must hold a valid minimum Class 5 Alberta Drivers License with less than 7 demerit points.  Learner's, probationary, graduated license, or motorcycle/moped only license will not be acceptable. A drivers abstract will be requested
