Position Description
The Faculty of Arts , Department of Sociology invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professors (Teaching) . The area of specialization is open but should complement the department’s offerings in Sociology and/or Law and Society . The anticipated start date is July 1, 2023. The positions require a PhD in Sociology or a closely related field. All But Dissertation (ABD) applicants will be considered if the candidate is close to completion. This position carries a normal teaching load of seven courses per year. The successful applicant will be required to teach introductory sociology and at least one of our core courses in statistics, research methods and theory.
Applicants must have demonstrated expertise in teaching undergraduate courses in relevant areas. We require candidates with clear records of teaching effectiveness, engagement with students, and success teaching large classes. Evidence of excellence in teaching should be demonstrated via a teaching dossier (see below). The successful applicants will maintain excellence in undergraduate teaching and learning; demonstrate and maintain expertise in pedagogical practices informed by the current research and scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL); and mentor students (including supervising students in the undergraduate Honours program). Preference will be given to applicants with an Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility (EDIA), and Decolonization focus to their teaching practice and/or SoTL work. In addition, the successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to departmental and university service, and active engagement with the relevant scholarship to keep current in SoTL and the discipline.
The Department of Sociology is a research-intensive department with high standards in teaching. We offer undergraduate, MA and PhD degrees in Sociology and an undergraduate degree in Law and Society.
