Position Overview

Total Rewards within Human Resources is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Analyst, Total Rewards (Group Benefits).

Total Rewards at the University of Calgary supports the attraction, motivation, and retention of staff.  Key elements include compensation, group benefits, pension, and recognition.  The Analyst role provides specialized technical, analytical, and consultative support for the delivery of programs and practices in each of the key Total Reward elements which in turn results in optimal staff engagement.

As a member of the Total Rewards team, this position will report to the Manager, Compensation and Recognition and is required to work closely with other members of the Total Rewards team.  This position will serve as the subject matter expert in the interpretation, communication, and education of the various comprehensive Total Rewards programs and practices for all University staff groups, with a focus on group benefits. The Analyst is responsible for providing superior day to day client service relating to benefit programs with a strong focus on educating managers and staff.

Additional duties will include other Total Rewards related functions such preparing job evaluations, supporting the development of recognition programs, developing various reports, conducting data analyses, and developing and distributing various communication tools and resources.  This includes involvement in special project based work in any of the Total Rewards disciplines.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Provide timely and credible expert advice, education and support to the Human Resources team, managers and staff on related Total Rewards programs and practices.
  • Maintain consistency in business practices and the interpretation of guidelines, policies and collective agreements.
  • Responsible for supporting members of all staff groups on benefit programs including: explaining coverage, determining eligibility, coordinating Flexible Spending Account allocations, tracking tuition support eligibility, and resolving claim inquiries.
  • Liaise with third-party providers/administrators, insurers, auditors, and internal departments on various matters, including, but not limited to: system and data issues, benefit and liability issues, benefit renewal processes, and plan experience.
  • Responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering various communications, and maintaining important electronic records of benefits and compensation information.
  • Assists in solving  disputes through effective relationship building, investigation, decision making, influencing and negotiating with Human Resources Advisors/Partners and managers.
  • Acts as a University representative at stakeholder/user group meetings, committees, and special project task forces.
  • Manages complex and sensitive situations such as death in service claims.
  • Complete surveys to benchmark and analyze competitiveness, identify emerging trends and best practices, and report on findings of specific Total Rewards components.
  • Works with data from information systems (e.g. PeopleSoft) and external sources to support cost benefit analysis, impact and scenario analysis, and production of statistical reports, summaries and briefs.
  • In conjunction with the manager, develop and maintain metrics or key performance indicators for regular reporting.
  • Support the Total Rewards compensation function, including conducting job evaluations, job reviews, job requests and salary administration.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • University degree in Business Administration or a related field, and 3 - 5 years of recent, related Human Resource and group benefits professional experience.
  • Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), Canadian Human Resources Professional (CHRP), or other relevant certification considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of group benefit and pension plans, compensation plans/systems, recognition and appreciation programs; preferably in a unionized, public service environment.
  • Knowledge of contract/plan text language, legal regulations and compliance issues, finance, tax and accounting principles as they relate to benefits, pension, and compensation considered an asset.
  • Ability to research, collect and interpret data for the purpose of developing effective and meaningful programs, including strategic thinking in contributing to the design of operational changes.
  • Ability to achieve results and successfully manage multiple competing priorities with minimal supervision and pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and strong interpersonal skills, including displaying sound judgment, collaboration, tact and diplomacy in interactions with various internal and external stakeholders.
  • A positive attitude and a demonstrated ability to be a collaborative team member with a service delivery focus.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Experience with Human Resources Information Systems (i.e. PeopleSoft) an asset.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal.
